Character contrast

Dysart is quite factual and reserved catalyst for other characters.

Only when we see him playing the game with alan that we get insight into an emotional aspect of
Dysart. When he makes alan leave. Big turning point in Dysarts character.

Dysart is resistant to emotional expression. Dysarts emotion is brought out by Alan, sort of.

When we find out about his personal life its not by Alan. In that case you could say that Alan and
Dysart are both catalysts for each others character development poppy.

Character development is developed throughout play. Alan as a character changes throughout the
play. Alan is introduced as vaguely normal, but something is off-putting.

Dysart stays calm and collected compared to alan.

When he tells the nurse to F- off it is revealed that something is off.

Dysarts treatment is comparable to jail mental prison vs physical prison.

Schaffer is exploring normality in society. Supported in all crisis points in Alans life =. Being with jill =
society. Being with equus = what alan wants to do.

Doing what you want to do vs doing what society wants to do.

Equally explored through Dysart. He feels he is trapped in his position as a psychiatrist.

Demonstrated by his dream and his sympathy for Alan.

Religion is explored through the skin flick. All these men worshipping the movie = comparisons
between them and Alan -> showing the hypocrisy in society.

Alans family has internal conflict between his religious mother and his atheist, socialist father. Both
beliefs are implanted on Alans mind.

What is the social norm? Alan doesnt know, so he gets conflused. What makes his religion not
socially acceptable.

Stereotype of doctors being disconnected from emotion.
