FIRE HOGS RAISE MONEY FOR WIDOWS & ORPHANS
It was my privilege to join Jack Wise, the LAFD Fire Hogs
Motorcycle Club, and many other wonderful organizations at the
19th Annual Fallen Heroes Memorial on August 26, 2017, held
at the LAFD Fire Museum. The generosity and support provided
year after year by the Fire Hogs in support of the Widows, Or-
phans & Disabled Firemens Fund - LAFRAs official charity - is
truly commendable and is greatly appreciated.
9/11 REMEMBRANCE CEREMONIES
On the 16th anniversary commemorating the most terrible
act of terrorism in this countrys history, I attended three 9/11
events around Los Angeles. Each year this anniversary stirs up
unsettling feelings but I cant express strongly enough how im-
portant it is for each of us to be present at a ceremony to face
those feelings by honoring the 343 firefighters who died in World
Trade Center, as well as all the other lives lost that sad day.
I found the Fire Department Historical Societys annual
9/11 memorial program at the Fallen Firefighters Memorial Plaza
in Hollywood to be exceptionally moving. I commend Jim Finn
and all the other volunteers who put together this event each year
and who continue to do such impressive and important work pre-
serving the rich history of the LAFD. Take the time to visit the
Hollywood Museum and Memorial as well as the Harbor Mu-
seum Old 36s in San Pedro. Learn more about our rich history

LOS ANGELES FALLEN FIREFIGHTERS
MEMORIAL CEREMONY
Mark your calendars and plan to attend the LAFD Annual
Fallen Firefighter Memorial Ceremony on Saturday, October 14,
2017, at 10:00 a.m. I urge everyone to attend the event which
honors fellow firefighters who passed away while in the line of
duty. After the ceremony you can take an opportunity to tour the
museum.
2017 LAFD INVITATIONAL GOLF TOURNAMENT
The 20th Anniversary 2017 LAFD Invitational Golf Tour-
nament was held on September 25, 2017, at Mountain Gate Coun-
try Club and we pulled off another amazing golf tournament. Pro-
ceeds from the tournament benefit the Widows & Orphans Fund.
A huge thank you goes out to all the sponsors and golfers, to the
golf committee, to Event Coordinator Juliet Brandolino, and to
all the volunteers who we couldnt have done it without.
Funds raised help the families of LAFD members facing
serious situations, such as being injured or killed in the line of
duty. The charity provides: basic living expenses, health insur-
ance; durable medical equipment, and other needed financial as-
sistance.

 On Saturday, August 26,
2017, CA-TF1 was called to deploy to Hurri-
cane Harvey. The 75-member team was mo-
bile by the early morning of August 27th. The
unprecedented scale Harvey led to additional
requests for help and by August, 29th, ele-
ments from ALL 28 FEMA Task Forces from
across the country were deployed.
Our team loaded more than 100,000
pounds of equipment in approximately 15
vehicles, three of which were 18 wheelers,
and drove to Texas. After more than 30 hours
of driving, developing contacts and situation-
al awareness, the team went to work in the
early morning of August 29.
They received a rescue and evacu-
ation mission for the Rosenberg area in Ft

Bend county, one of the flooded communities
in South East Texas. CA-TF1 members worked
in concert with local Fire Departments, CA-
TF4, AZ-TF1, TX-TF1 and the Texas National
Guard to search flooded homes and extract
victims and pets.
By August 31st, the combination of
the teams had successfully rescued 50 adults,
4 children and 12 animals.
With their work finished in Texas,
the team was on the road home from Hous-
ton when they got the call to turn around.
Hurricane Irma was crawling up Florida after
thrashing the Keys. Four days and more than
1,700 miles later, they were at a staging area
in Orlando and ready for battle once again.
 Back at home in Chatsworth, Hilda
Franco joined dozens of other volunteers at
the Operation Gratitude warehouse to stuff
care bags for first responders in Houston,
knowing one of the bags might end up in her
husbands hands (Capt II Sergio Franco).
Knowing that my husband is there,
it makes me so proud and it makes me so
worried at the same time, Franco said. I
felt like ok, hes out there doing something,
I need to do something too. I felt like I had
to do this, its one small part of what I can
do to help.

 The World Police and Fire Games are
an Olympic-style competition with 10,000 ath-
letes representing law enforcement, firefight-
ers, and officers from corrections, probation,
border protection, immigration and customs
from 70+ countries across the world competing
in 60+ sports. The Games are open to active
and retired law enforcement and fire service
personnel.
The impetus for the WPFG was the Po-
lice Olympics first held in San Diego in 1967.
San Diego Police Captain Veon Duke Nyhus
recognized the need to promote physical fitness
and camaraderie amongst members of the law
enforcement community.
The name of the original games has
changed several times throughout the years.
From 1967 through 1989, the Games were
known as the California Police Olympics. In
1990, the name changed to the California Po-
lice Summer Games. With the inclusion of fire-
fighters in 2000, the name changed to the Cali-
fornia Police and Fire Games. 2005 brought the
inclusion of several states in the western US
and a change to the Western States Police and
Fire Games. Starting with the games in 2012,
they were known as the United States Police
and Fire Championships.
With the continuing success of the Cali-
fornia Games, planning began in 1983 for the
first World Police and Fire Games, which were
held in 1985 in San Jose. The aim of the World
Police and Fire Games is to offer the same vari-
ety of sports, and same high caliber of venues,
officials and athletic achievement as the Cali-
fornia Games, but on a global scale.
Subsequent World Police and Fire
Games have been held biennially in San Di-
ego; Vancouver, Canada; Memphis; Colorado
Springs; Melbourne, Australia; Calgary, Can-
ada; Stockholm, Sweden; Indianapolis; Bar-
celona, Spain; Quebec City, Canada; Adelaide,
South Australia; British Columbia, Canada;
New York City; Belfast, Northern Ireland; Fair-
fax County, Virginia; and Montreal, Canada.
The size and scope of the World Games
continues to grow. Attendance has steadily
increased as have the number of countries
involved. While attendance averages about
9000, the 2011 WPFG in New York holds the
current attendance record with over 16,000
athletes competing in 67 sports from almost
70 countries.
The next World Police and Fire Games
will be held in Chengdu, China on August 8 -
18, 2019.

short board and longboard.
The only surfer to represent the LAFD
in the games was William Fischer from FS
50-B. He is a former state parks lifeguard at
Huntington Beach and has been surfing all
his life. William competed in the Open Water
Swim, and both the longboard and shortboard
surfing events. He was proud to take home
the silver medal in the Mens Longboarding
Open Division.

(50+), Porche averaged 196 to earn the first
of three silver medals. In Doubles, it was the
pair of Raymond Keene and Edward Mar-
tin that found themselves in a 3-way battle
for 2nd place. In the end, Keene and Mar-
tin edged a Malaysian squad by just 12 pins
(over five games) to grab 3rd place and the
bronze.
For the Team event, Porche, Keene,
Martin and Alex Molina were scheduled on
the same pair as their Australian friends from
previous World Games. The two squads ran
away from the rest of the field. Ultimately the
Aussies squeaked out a 21-pin victory for the

 The Motocross competitions were held
at the Glen Helen Raceway. Todd Gravitt (21-
A) finished 2nd in the 40-44 year old class.
Scott Nelson (107-B) competed in the 50-54
year old class. Blake Fair (49s) competed in
the 55-59 year old class, capturing the silver in
the Mens Grand Prix 50+ - Novice Class and
also a bronze medal.

The swimming events were held at the
Exposition Park Swim Stadium, adjacent to the
Coliseum.
In the Mens 55-59 (Individual) races,
Robby Cordobes (3-C) captured the silver
medal in both the100 Meter Freestyle and 200
Meter Freestyle.
In the Mens 35-39 (Individual), Dan
Ferrari (13-C) competed in the 50 Meter Back-
stroke. Ferrari also competed with Unified
USA, a team with FDNY members. They
grabbed 4th place in both the Mens - 30+ - 200
Meter Freestyle Relay and the Mixed - 30+ -
200 Meter Medley Relay. In the Mens 30+ 200
Meter Medley Relay, the Russian Federal Po-
lice and Hong Kong Allied Law Enforcement
took gold and silver. Unified USA Fire took the
bronze, passing Brazil National Police in the
final five meters.

 The boxing matches were held at the
Los Angeles Convention Center. The LAFD
had two fighters in the ring: Shawn Lenske
(MFC) and Marco Franco (9-C). They both
competed in the 156 lb class. Lenske dropped
25 lbs in three months to compete. In the fi-
nals, Franco fought a boxer from FDNY. He
knocked out the New Yorker in the 2nd round,
bringing home the gold for the LAFD.

two major back surgeries as well as a major
shoulder and bicep tendon repair to her throw-
ing arm but she still loves competition and
wanted to challenge herself and try to continue
to represent the LAFD even as a senior athlete.
And the hard work paid off. Her med-
als were: Gold in the Heptathlon, two silver
medals in the Discus and High Jump, and four
bronze medals in the Hammer, Javelin, Shot
Put and 200M - all competing in the 55-59 age
group.
Leah says, It was an honor to represent
the Los Angeles City Fire Department and as
always, it was an amazing experience meeting
and competing with my fellow firefighters and
police officers from around the world. I will
cherish the memories forever.

Armando Martinez (FF retired) com-
peted in the 60+ cycling events. In the Road
Race out in Acton, with 35 miles and 2600 feet
of climbing, he took 2nd place out of 14 riders.
Out at Lake Castiac for the 2.5 mile hill climb -
at a 6.7% grade Armando was able to win the
silver medal. But the Sprint competition is his
forte, and Armando was able to beat the pack
and win the gold.

 The 18+ Novice Division Hockey
games were played at the familiar Iceoplex
on Easy Street in Simi Valley. But the tourna-
ment was anything but easy for the LAFD club.
They were able to defeat the US Department of
Homeland Security team but then lost games to
the Calgary PD, the NYPD and Northern Ire-
land.
The team was led by Brett Willis and
included Bryan Willis, Dan Will, Danny Wu,
Chris Miyasato, Rob Shaw, Dominic Marquis,
Kyle Levindofske, Nick Prange, Matt Bortel,
Matt Potter, Brendan Cavanaugh, Al Boctor,

 August 10th and 11th were mid-90
degree days in Santa Clarita at the Steven-
son Ranch Horseshoe Club, the venue for the
World Police and Fire Games Horseshoe Com-
petition. Competitors from many parts of the
United States, Canada, Norway and Australia
signed up to pitch horseshoes at this beauti-
ful facility that sports twelve professional clay
courts. Three ladies from the Northern Terri-
tory Police, Australia, and one from the Los
Angeles Fire Department joined eighteen men
in the two-day contest which broke down into
four divisions of singles and three divisions of Doubles Competitors
doubles.
During the contest it is estimated that
the twenty-two competitors pitched 12.4 tons
of steel and walked 26.6 miles. As a result of
this effort, three members of the Los Angeles
Fire Department took home four medals. They

The next match-up was a familiar foe as
the Salty Dogs took on the LAPD. Fans packed
the stands as the two local agencies slugged it
out for local bragging rights and a berth in the
bronze medal game. The game was tight from
the drop of the puck, both teams fighting for LAFD Salty Dogs vs Moscow PD

lection time again is bearing down upon us. Elections are a very im-
portant aspect for the life and health of your Relief Association. It is
now time to nominate members of the Association for the offices of
six Active Trustees and one Pension Trustee positions.
There will be six (6) Active Trustees elected at-large by Active members
and one (1) Pension Trustee, elected by Pension members, for three year
terms. If more than six actives run, the six with the most votes will elected.
If more than one pensioner runs, the one with most votes will be elected. If
no more than six active members and no more than one pension member
runs, there will be a white ballot declared by the Board and those running
will be deemed elected.
As stated in the Bylaws, Article VII, Chapter I, Section 7136,
The Trustees shall attend all meetings of the Board, unless ex-
cused, visit the sick and injured members in their respective districts,
report upon all matters coming within their scope of assignments and
responsibilities, and perform such other duties as may be assigned to them
by the Board.
The Trustees are the elected representatives of the membership of the As-
sociation, who are responsible to their constituency and to the Associa-
tion as a whole. A conscientious effort must be made by each Trustee to
be knowledgeable of the Associations By-Laws and their responsibilities
to the members of the Association. The Association is governed, and its
business conducted by the Board of Trustees. Dissemination of information
relative to the Associa-tion and to its membership is conducted primarily by
the Trustees. Conversely, opinions, requests and suggestions are channeled
to the Board, through the Trustees. A close liaison with the membership is
paramount to the performance of the duties of a Trustee.
Nominations are open October 1 through October 16, and will close at the
end of the business day on October 16, 2017.
Only members of the Association in good standing may serve as an
Officeror Trustee. The commitment of a Trustee position is for three years.

 I thought bein placed on hold and
havin to listen to the worlds worst music
was annoyin, but now theres somethin
much worse. Im bein bombarded with
surveys. Every business wants to know
how theyre doin. Banks, MY credit
union and most on-line businesses all want
feedback on their services. And you dont
even have to do business with them, just
call them and it generates a survey. And
with most of these surveys, you also have
to justify your answer. In other words, you
have to write an essay explainin your an-
swer.
Luckily, I have caller ID so I usu-
ally never answer the phone if I dont
recognize the number or business name
thats displayed. Unfortunately, my bank
called the other day and I assumed it had
somethin to do with my account or credit
card, so I answered the call. It was a dang
phone survey. However, there was actually
a live person on the other end, so I fool-
ishly agreed to participate.
So the survey started and I was told
the ratin scale was 1 through 10, with 10
bein the very best. After about five min-
utes of answerin 9, 6, 10, 8 and so on, I
finally asked how much longer this sur-
vey would take. He answered, ten more
minutes. What? I immediately went into
my best Bruce Bickly impersonation by
askin, What kind of an operation are you
runnin? Im sure my comments went
in one ear and out the other, but it did re-
mind me of the days when we tried to get a
straight answer out of a chief. Good times.
Etiquette, which basically means
good manners, is somethin I need to
improve upon. Dont get me wrong, I
adore my wife and I treat her like royalty.
Heck, Ive even put her on a Capt. IIs sal-
ary and unlike my poor unfortunate self,
shes paid weekly, in cash! No, my prob-
lem is I dont dress very well. When we go
out to eat I usually wear a ratty T-shirt that
feature stains, holes and pants that match.

Extinguisher Fund?
The brain child of Ted Bailie, retired from the LAFD and LAFRA, your stations Extinguisher Fund is a simple
way to collect donations for the Widows, Orphans and Disabled Firemens Fund. Ted saw the accumulation of
change that the cook dumped into the mess fund box each shift and had a better idea. If this change was instead
collected for the WODFF he figured it could really add up. With an average of 50 cents per day per station, in a year
there would be . . . well, you can do the math!
So take your turn in the cooking rotation and remember to drop all your change into your stations extin-
guisher. There should be one in every firehouse. And any loose change in your pockets, any that you find in the TV
chairs, or hoarded in the ashtray of your vehicle can be thrown in for good measure.
The Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firemens Fund is the heart of the Relief Association. This fund provides
assistance to our firefighters and families who are faced with personal difficulties and tragedies. Donations are the
sole means of support for this Fund.
Firefighters risk their lives to protect the community on a daily basis. Thus, they and their families can be
comforted in knowing that the Fire Department Family, supported by the Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firemens
Fund, is there for them in times of need.

At 6:11 pm on August 24, 2017, firefighters extin-

guished a large blaze at a vacant home in the 9400 block
of N Sepulveda Blvd in North Hills. The secured structure
presented several forcible entry challenges. Firefighters
stopped the blaze from spreading to an exposed building
while achieving knock down in just 33 minutes.

On Friday, September 1, 2017, in the early afternoon, companies re-

sponded to 10850 W La Tuna Canyon Road for a reported brush fire. Initially they
found one acre burning along the side of the 210 Fwy. Increased winds flamed
the fire and caused it to jump the freeway. Additional resources from LACoFD,
Verdugo Fire, Burbank Fire, Pasadena Fire, Glendale Fire and Angeles National
Forest were for called in for assistance. Precautionary evacuations in Sunland,
Burbank and Glendale were also in effect.
By Sunday night, the fire in the Verdugo Mountains had grown from
5,865 acres to 7,003 acres, But then Mother Nature helped the more than 1,000
firefighters battle the flames with sudden rainfall and cooler weather conditions.

 A huge showing of both active and re-
tired members turned out for Engineer Jay Cae-
sars last shift and retirement breakfast at Fire
Station 84 on August 26, 2017. It could have
been that the crowd showed up to help send
off a good friend, a great engineer and an all-
around Class One guy. Or maybe it was the
free gourmet breakfast? Jay pulled all the stops
and put out quite a spread. He hired Rise and
Shine Catering, known for their studio work,
and they sent over four chefs to whip up a feast
for a king.
The event actually started at 84s in
the morning and then spilled over to the Sage-
brush Cantina in the afternoon. The Fire Hogs
wrapped up their Memorial Ride at the Cantina
that afternoon and were happy to drink a few
toasts in Jays honor.
Jay entered the Drill Tower on Octo-
ber 9, 1983, with the current fire chief as one
of his classmates. He promoted to engineer in
1993, got to 84s in 2000 and decided his career
path had peaked. Seventeen years later he was
now leaving the station, the community and the
LAFD all better than when he started.
LAFRAs retirement badge was pre-
sented by B/C Andy Wordin and UFLACs
Adam VanGerpen was on hand to bestow the
Axe Plaque. Jay decided against having some-
one present the PRB, not wanting to let his per-
sonal secrets out in mixed company.
The guys from 84s came up to present
their gift. They had a giant wooden American
flag plaque designed especially for Jay. It in-
cluded all his assignments and an engineers
badge next to the field of stars. They also made
up an LA Kings jersey for Jay, with his name
and the number 84 on the back.
Instead of just handing over his badge
to his captain, Jay made a special trip to the
18th floor the following Monday. Instead of his
usual flop flops and tank top, he actually wore
a suit and tie on this downtown adventure. He
brought with him dozens of bagels and cream
cheese (B&R would have melted) in a gesture
of thanks to all the chiefs and support staff.
A grateful LAFD thanks Jay Caesar
for the bagels, for his years of service and for
always doing his best to keep us a Class One
organization.

I first met Mayonnaise Legs at FS
9 in 1974. He was a fireman on the B shift.
He was an incredible athlete: Basketball,
handball, racquetball. You name the sport.
Harley [Rust] made it look easy. I can see
him walking up the steps from the hand-
ball court after a spirited game and directly
to the ice machine for a handful of ice after
another victory.
He was so funny. Always quick
with something witty. I was very fortunate
as a young fireman to work with some out-
standing firefighters. Harley was quite pos-
sibly the best. He made it look effortless.
Seldom a missed step. Always working at
the seat of the fire. Never wanting praise
or recognition. He instinctively knew what
needed to be done. I was honored to know
him. A really great guy.

I met John [Knierimin] in February
1973. when I was promoted to Auto-Fire-
man and assigned to FS 60-B. I can hon-
estly say that the time I spent at 60s was
the most memorable and fun time I have
had at any assignment on the job and John
was a big part of that. With the help of
other crazies on that shift like Joe Longan,
Tom Dempsey, Tim Walgren, Tom Rix,
Epi Reyes and Bud Lawson. Johns clas-
sic laugh could almost always be heard
around the station.
When Phil McKim (the TFC) want-
ed to sell a new program or make changes
to station procedures, the first thing hed
do is sell John on the idea and hed do the
rest.
John loved the LAFD, especially
60s. His artistic talents benefitted the job
in many ways, from printing out physical
fitness routine boards (theres a story there)
to lettering the side of Fireboat 4 (theres
a story there). On summer evenings, John
could often be seen sitting on a park bench
across the street from 60s admiring the
station and being thankful that he worked
there (theres a story there too).
John was one of a kind. He was a
great truckman who could be relied on to
get anything done well on the fireground.
Around the station, he was a hard worker
who was always in the middle of some
scheme to mess with someone.
My sympathy to Joanie and his
children for their loss.

Jim arrived upon the scene, no county crews
were there. He helped his men lay hose lines to
the blazing carpet warehouse. Into the smoke,
choking furnace, with heat intense, and rafters
burning, Jims nozzle spewed its hissing spray
on flaming tongues around him. Unquenched
by spray or scalding steam, the snakes of fire
hissed louder, consuming floor joists overhead,
supporting mezzanine. Heavy carpets soaked
with water warped the wooden timbers, with
creaky, cracking, crunching noise, the balcony
crashed under. Jim yelled Get out!- to men
behind, shutting down his nozzle, they dropped
the hose and scurried back, escaping just in
time. But not Jim! Vulnerable to bashing beam-
No way could he survive. As his broken helmet
told it all Dead at thirty five.
I wasnt there, but I was called, and of
this fact Im certain, Jim bravely fought the
final fire til Fate brought down the curtain.
Devastated and despairing, his death was such
a blow, I dreaded going to his home to let his
family know. Mournful messenger of sorrow, I
slowly drove to see a stunned grieving wife and
child, whod, heard it on TV. (News reporters, I
hear tell, had seen Jims name spelled out upon
his crushed and broken helmet, retrieved from
where it fell) A roaring, flood broke loose with-
in my bursting heart. Blending with their flow-
ing tears, I let my rivers start. In the frequency
hereafter- in this lifes afterglow-Ill bet Jim is
teasing devils, helping Peter run the show! For
in this new dimension, Jims not fighting fire,
but making dates with angels, and signing in
the choir.
Franks note: My father Stanley, who
was a Captain at 27s, worked with Jimmy and
spoke highly of him. All the members at 27s
appreciated his humor and capabilities. Fortu-
nately for my father, he was off duty the day
of the incident. At the time of his death, Fire-
man Hassan was survived by his wife Elizabeth
and daughter Lyn who was seven years old at
the time. Lyn and the family have been strong
supporters of the Memorial and have attended
many of the LAFD Memorial Ceremonies.

Morse of Truck 5 at an incident on April 7,
1924, LAFD Chief Engineer Ralph J. Scott
wrote the following letter to his mother:
There are times when words fail to
convey the depths of brotherly feeling, when
in this dangerous service of ours, some man is
called upon to pay the extreme penalty which
this work exacts. There is not a man in the de-
partment whose heart does not go out in sym-
pathy to those left behind, for not one of us
knows that the next alarm of fire may be the
last call for him.

The job of the members of the fire de-
partment is to serve the public. This is done in
many different ways, with the priority to pre-
serve life and property. One of the motivations
to become a firefighter is the desire to help oth-
ers - a high calling to say the least. Remember,
the LAFD started with a group of volunteers in
the 1800s. Our Museums, the Memorial and
the many projects we have ongoing are only
possible through the willingness of people to
volunteer to help. They make a commitment of
some time and effort so that what we do will
also serve the public in meeting our mission to
preserve the history of the LAFD, to educate
children and adults in fire and life safety and on
the history of the fire service, and to memorial-
ize the members of our department who have
given their lives to serve others and contributed
so much to the citizens. The volunteers of the
Historical Society are not only members of the
LAFD, but are also family, friends and people
from all walks of life in the community who see
our cause as an important one.
When we look at all of our hard work-
ing volunteers, we see the very same people
that started with us when we opened the Mu-
seum in Hollywood on October 11, 2001. Sure
we have added a few more and some have
given of their time and moved on. We are now
in need of a large number of volunteers to help
us reach another higher plateau as an organiza-
tion. Many of our active and retired members
have told me that when they get time they will

be there to help. Most of them have not had
time yet, but they know when I see them I will
ask. We all realize that we have many commit-
ments in our lives and becoming a volunteer for
any organization means a change in lifestyle
an occasional drive to one of the Museums or
to the Ralph J. Scott to do some work. We are
not asking for a commitment of time that is un-
reasonable for anybody. Each of our volunteers
makes their own schedule and many travel
from some great distances to put a day in at the
Museum.
Many of you who read this article are
asking Whats in it for me? Any volunteer
knows that there are many rewards from feel-
ing good about helping others, to completing
a project, the camaraderie, staying involved in
an active way with the LAFD, and the uplifting
feeling of accomplishment and giving back
to others of your experience and expertise. We
need individuals, families, friends, and how
about some of our active fire station members
who instead of going home in the morning,
come to one of our museums to put in some
work.
Here is a list of some of the volunteer
jobs we have. If you see one or two you like,
please call or email. I will personally contact
you so that you can join our team:
