Content: Introduction to Vietnamese, Vietnamese word and syllable + the alphabet, how to learn by
heart the alphabet, some notices and differences with the English alphabet.

I. THE INTRODUCTION TO VIETNAMESE

A complete Vietnamese sentence:

There are 5 syllables and each one is separated by the blank


A syllable can be a compete word, but sometimes we need more than 1 word to create a
word. Ex: TI, MUN, HC are formed by one syllable, TING VIT is a word formed by 2
syllables

The structures of a Vietnamese syllable

HC: - C: initial consonant

- O: vowel

- C: final sound, which can be consonant or vowel

- the mark .: tone

VOWEL AND TONE MARK ARE THE ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF A VIETNAMESE SYLLABLE, a
VNese syllable can lack initial or final sound, but vowel and tone mark

II. THE VIETNAMESE ALPHABET


THE ENGLISH ALPHABET

12 VOWELS: A, , , E, , I, O, , , U, , Y
A: ba (three) , xa (far), cha (father), da (skin)

: n (eat) , sn (hunt), xm (tattoo)

: chn (foot), sn (yard), cn (kg)

E (like get, let, set, etc. in English) : m (mother), xem (watch)

: l (pear), kh (star fruit)

I/Y same sounds like /i:/ (bee, see, knee in English): ch (sister), i (go), d (mothers sister)

M ( America)
I is called short - /i/ (I ngn), Y is called long - /i/ (i di) in Vietnamese

O: cho (give), t m (curious), to (big)

(sounds like oh in English): t (car), (umbrella), c (miss Jeongah)

(sounds like girl, member): m (dream), ph, nh (miss)

U (sounds like boot, too): ch (Uncle), t (card)
