IT GOVERNANCE

What is governance? And why does it matter? IT governance has been defined as having to do with "specifying the
decision rights and accountability framework to encourage desirable behavior in using IT."*

So governance has to do with decision-making rightswho makes which decisions and under what circumstances.
It also requires a framework or some structure to ensure accountability. And lastly, governance is outcome-driven;
it has as its goal encouraging certain behavior (and, by implication, discouraging other behavior).

Governance isn't just (or even primarily) about making the "right" decision every time (though that would be nice);
rather, it's about the process for decision-making. Good process ensures consistency and accountability; so when
something goes wrong (or right!), it's easier to trace what happened and what we can do about it.
