Chapter2. Motion in a straight line

Problem:
A person is falling down from top of the building.

Spider man (also at the top of the building), coming for a rescue shoots
spider web towards the person 5 seconds after he starts to fall down .

What is a minimum velocity of the spider web to rescue the person?

*gravitational acceleration is given as9.8m/s 2

*Assume the Spider web moves in constant velocity, not affected by

the gravity.

* Assume the building is infinitely high.

* We are only considering 1-D motion in vertical direction

Solution:
Assume that spider web meets the person after time t it was blasted.

Then, the motion of spider web and person can be described as below
1
x = ( + 5)2
2
x =

For the rescue, x = x must have solution for certain t.

So,
1
( + 5)2 =
2
g 2 + (10 2) + 25 = 0

must have solution. So the discriminant of the equation must be positive or zero.

(10 2)2 4 25 0

Which gives either

10 2 10

or

10 2 10

The first inequality gives negative v, which doesnt make sense (it has solution of negative t, which is wrong in
our situation).

And the second one gives

10

From which we can obtain the minimum velocity for the rescue, = 10 = 98/
