Tunnell Observations Niecea Freeman isa talented educator that demonstrates to a very high degree the traits of a good teacher. She meets all the standards listed on the rubric with a rating of highly effective or near that rating Standard 1: Planning and Preparation ‘A great amount of effort is evident in the design of lessons and preparations for instruction. Resources are selected and/or created ‘to meet the developmental needs of the students and language proficiency. Instruction is clear and promotes student learning of the objectives that are clearly aligned to the standards. The Learning activities structured into lessons are suited to the diverse skill ‘and needs of the learners as she guldes them to master the objective of the lessons. Formative assessments are used to guide ‘ongoing planning as well make changes within the lesson to deepen or guide students learning as well as revise future lessons. Standard 2: Classroom Environment: The classroom environment is safe for students and promotes their learning effectively by promoting respect and rapport between all members of the classroom. Positive interactions promote student pride in their work by focusing on the expectations of ‘behaviors, learning and achievement. Classroom procedures are well structured to facilitate transitions. Groupings of students are carefully decided based on a variety of criteria and not just for expediency. Students are given clear expectations for behaviors, ‘monitored by the teachers for compliance, and are held accountable by the teacher for violations. The room is set up for activities boards display student work as well as teacher created resources and are utilized and lessons in a variety of configurations. Bull during lessons. Standard 3: Instruction: Preparation for instruction includes expectations for learning direction and procedures that are both written on the board, spoken prior to lesson and written for individual students (depending on the student or activity). Questions are prepared before the lesson to fit the objectives/goals ofthe lesson while developmentally appropriate for the students’ sills and knowledge of English. The result isa discussion that engages and involves the entire class. The questioning strategy guides the student to the lessons objective ‘and deepens the learning of the students as well as motivating them to further learning. Activities are well chosen, groupings well structured, appropriate materials at hand, and a variety of strategies used to teach. Niecea has chosen to work on her pacing and wait time as a reflective and self-evaluator. In reviewing materials covered in prior lessons, Niecea assesses the depth of learning, and adjusts future lessons to help students meet the level of learning that is expected. Standard 4: Professional Responsibility Throughout al areas in NIS, Niecea has reflected accurately on her work and uses those reflections to future planning. She ‘maintains current and accurate records of the student's work, behaviors, skills and needs. She has participated in three parent/teacher conferences displaying professional demeanor and making positive contributions on many occasions. Her professional Contributions to the NIS educational community include working well and contributing to the social science department asa valued member. She also serves on a WASC Focus Group with the school as well as being a co-chair of the Professional Development Committee, as school wide committee. She is also developing good peer relations with all those she works with at NIS, She shows growth and rapid development as a professional educator. Terry L Tunnel
