Check with your dealer for the latest information. 1-3. ORDERING PARTS a. Transmission Nameplate (1) The nameplate (fig. 1-4) is located at the upper rear side of the transmission housing. The nameplate shows the transmis sion serial number, part number (assembly Division of General Motors ‘Corporation| Fig. 1-4. Transmission nameplate number) and model number, all of which must be supplied when ordering replacement parts for requesting service information. (2) In the marine transmission model designations, the letters and numbers indi- cate the following: M_ — Marine transmission MH — Heavy duty marine transmission 10 —1.0:1 gear retiuction i 1 gear reduction 15 1 gear reduction 17 —1.7:1 gear reduction 20 —2.0:1 gear reduction — 2.5:1 gear reduction 1 gear reduction 1 gear reduction 1 gear reduction ‘ight-hand engine rotation — Left-hand engine rotation — Output configuration for propeller drive shaft — Output configuration for combining gears b. Parts Catalog. Do not order by illus tration item numbers on exploded views in this manual. All replacement parts should be ordered from your dealer. Parts are listed in the current Parts Catalog PC1983EN. 1-4. DESIGN FEATURES a. Planetary Gearing (foldout 1, 2). The Allison Marine Transmission includes one con- stant-mesh, straight-spur gear planetary as- 1.2 Copyright 1992 General Motors Corp. GENERAL INFORMATION sembly. The planetary enables the transmis~ sion output to rotate in forward when the for~ ward eluteh is engaged and in reverse when the reverse eluteh is engaged. b. Clutches (foldouts 1, 2. The forward cluteh and reverse cluteh are both single- plate clutches. For each clutch, the one frietion-faced cluteh plate is located be- tween a backplate and piston. ‘The clutches are hydraulically applied, oil cooled, and spring released. Wear is automatically com~ pensated and no adjust ment is necessary. ¢. Fywheel (foldouts 1, 2. The engine flywheel is an essential part of the transmis~ sion. The forward eluteh is incorporated in the flywheel assembly. ‘The flywheel assem~ bly is shown in phantom on foldouts 1 and 2 Rebuild of the flywheel and forward cluteh is not covered in this manual. See your engine service manual. 4. Reduetion Gearing (foldouts 1, 2 Each model has a unique reduction gear and pinion gear assembly. These two gears are designated either right-hand or left-hand. ‘Together they provide for the output reduc- tion ratio. Refer to para 1-3a(2. @ Transmission-to-Engine Coupling. ‘The transmission is bolted to the engine flywheel housing which is, in turn, bolted directly to the engine. {, Hydraulie System (foldout 9). Oi from the oil pan (Sump) is pumped into the system to provide hydraulic pressure to apply the clutehes and to lubricate and cool the transmission components. ‘The transmission hydraulic system is separate from the engine oil system. g- Shift System. The selector valve as- sembly provides for reverse, neutral, and for- ward operation. The control valve lever is connected by mechanical linkage to the shift tower, Movement of the lever from one de- tent position to another causes immediate transfer of oil from one hydraulic circuit to the other. The operator must move the shift tower selector from neutral to reverse ot forward position. Full torque shifting is not recommended except in emergencies. 1-5. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS NOTE Refer to the operating manual for the craft in which the Alli- son Marine Transmission is in- stalled. CAUTION Shifting from forward to reverse ‘through neutral may be made at any speed, However, for longest cluteh life, let the engine idle momentarily between shifts. a: Emergency "Get Home" Feature (1) In the event of a hydraulie prob- lem in the transmission while the craft is away from a repair facility, the forward cluteh ean be engaged mechanically. (2) Remove the large pipe plug in the forward face of the flywheel housing. (3) With the engine throttle set in the STOP position, rotate the flywheel until one of the emergency engagement bolts is in line with the pipe plug opening. (4 Remove the bolt and jam nut from the flywheel. (5) Remove the jam nut from the bolt and save it. (8) Thread the emergeney engage- ment bolt (without the jam nut in place) into the flywheel until the bolt just contacts the forwand eluteh plate. (1) Do steps (3) through (6) until all three Gix on earlier models) emergency en- gagement bolts are in place. Install the pipe plug. (8) Tighten the bolts uniformly to mechanically engage the forward clutch. (9) Remove the breather and add one additional gallon of engine oil to the trans~ mission to prevent overheating. Install the breather. Copyright 1992 General Motors Corp. 1-3 M, MH SERIES MARINE TRANSMISSIONS. (10) Use only the neutral and forward position of the shift tower selector lever. Do not use reverse. (11) To prevent subsequent damage to the transmission, this method should be used for the shortest possible distance to @ repair facility. Table 1-1. - ‘Towing. All lubrication and clutetrap- ply oil is provided by the engine-driven oil pump. THEREFORE, ANYTIME THE CRAFT MUST BE TOWED FOR MORE THAN A HALF-WILE (ONE KILOMETER), THE DRIVE- LINE TO THE PROPELLER SHAFT MUST BE WELD STATIONARY OR DISCONNECTED, — SPECIFICATIONS AND DATA ‘Transmission types. + +e ee ee eee General rating: Planetary and reduction gears Max Input Torque Max Shaft Power @ Max Input Speed Model Application 1b ft (Nem) horsepower _(Kw) RPM M11,15,17,20 Pleasure 13501830 540 403 2300 M11,15,17,20 Crew 940 1274 375 280 2100 Mi 15,20 Pleasure 1800 2440 720 537 2300 Mi 25 Pleasure 1500 2034 600 47 2300 Mi 15,20,25 Crew 11501559 460 343 2100 MH 25,30,37,45 Work 690936 230 172 . 1800 Gear ratio and input rotation: Approx.
