Evaporator Performance OBJECTIVES: Lipon completion of this exercise, you will be able to evaluate the performance of a direct-expan evaporator INTRODUCTION: You will use superheat and the coil-o-air temperature difference to evaluate a direct-expansion evaporator. TOOLS AND MATERIALS: An electronic thermometer, screwdriver, electrician’s tape, some insulation, service valve wrench, gauge manifold, goggles, and a refrigeration system with a thermostatic expansion valve and service valves. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS: You will be fastening gauges co the refrigeration system. Wear goggles and gloves. You must have had instruction in using the gauge manifold before starting this exercise. PROCEDURES 1. Pur on your goggles and gloves. Fasten the high- and low-side gauge lines to the service valves. Open the service valves by turning them off the back seat. Turn them clockwise. 2. Purge the air from the gauge lines by loosening the fittings slightly at the manifold. Fasten a thermometer lead to the suction line of the evaporator where the line leaves the coil. This will be in the same area as the TXV’s (thermostatic expansion valve's) remote bulb. Be sure the temperature lead is insulated. 4, Fasten another lead in the return air of the evaporator. 5. Start the system and allow ito pall down to within 10°F of its intended use—lows medium, or high temperatare— and record the following before the thermostat shuts the compressor off: ‘© Suction pressure:___psig + Temperature at the evaporator outlet: F + Refrigerant boiling temperature (converted from suction pressure) F ‘+ Evaporator superheat (evaporator outlet temperature ~ boiling temperature) F Return air temperature: __*F + TD (temperature difference between return-air and reftigerant boiling temperature): __ °F + Discharge pressure: psig + Condensing temperature (converted from discharge pressure): F 6. Back seat the service valves and remove the gauge lines. 7. Remove the temperature leads and replace them in their ease MAINTENANCE OF WORKSTATION AND TOOLS: Replace all panels and return all tools to their respective places. Make sure the refrigerated box is returned to its correct candition. SUMMARY STATEMENT: Describe how well the evaporator is performing in this rest. QUESTIONS 1, Whar is typical superheat for a typical direct- ‘expansion evaporator performing in the correct temperature range? 2, What is the difference between a direet-expansion and a flooded evaporator? 3, What device is used to evenly feed refrigerant to, fan evaporator with more than one circuit? 4, What would the symptoms of a flooded evapora- tor be on a direct-expansion system? ‘What would the symptoms of a dirty coil be? |. Why is it necessary to insulate the bulb on the thermometer when taking the superheat of an evaporator? What is the problem when the evaporator super hear reading is too low? What is the problem when the evaporator super heat reading is too high? Whar does the term “starved evaporator” mean? ). When the evaporator superheat is too low, what can happen to the compress
