Guardian Ad Litem Checklist

The court expects all Guardians ad Litem to fully and faithfully fulfill
their role in accordance with the guidelines and rules promulgated by the
Virginia State Bar and the Supreme Court. The Court has a responsibility to
the children and families before it to insure such compliance. In order to do
so, the Courts have adopted the following checklist which is to be appended
to any Guardian ad Litem time sheet when submitted to the Court. Guardians.
ad Litem are to check off and date only those items that apply for the time
period covered by the time sheet being submitted.
Notwithstanding the checklist, the Court expects the Guardian ad
Litem to fulfill the following duties in every case at every stage in the
proceedings:
1. Ensure the child’s attendance at all proceedings where such
would be appropriate and/or mandated.
2. Appear in Court for all hearings prepared to fully and
vigorously represent the child’s interests.
3. Prepare the child to testify if necessary and appropriate and in
accordance with the child’s interest and welfare.
4, Advise the child, in terms the child can understand, of the
Court’s decision and its consequences for the child and others
in the child’s life.
