THE SPELLING FOR VERBS IN ING

Basic rule: Just add -ing to the base verb.


Ex. work - working walk - walking.

When it is one syllable verb (Consonant+ Vowel+ Consonant) DOUBLE the last consonant.
Ex. sit - sitting run - running get-getting

* Exception: If the verb ends in -w,-y,-x.


Ex. snow - snowing fix - fixing enjoy -enjoying.

In longer verbs (two syllables or more) DO NOT DOUBLE if the last part of the verb
is not stressed.

visit VIS- it visiting

But if the last part of the verb is stressed, DOUBLE THE LAST CONSONANT.
Ex. prefer - preferring begin - beginning

Verbs that end in -e, drop the -e and add -ing.


Ex. smile - smiling write - writing.

Verbs that end in -ie, drop the -ie and write -y+ ing.
Ex. die - dying

SPELLING RULES FOR ADDING S IN THE THIRD PERSON SINGULAR.

Some verbs change their spelling when s is added in the third person singular.
a. When a verb ends in y immediately preceded by a consonant, the y is changed to ie before the ending s is added.
Ex. study - studies -

b. However, when a verb ends in y immediately preceded by a vowel, the y is not changed before the ending s is added.
Ex. enjoy - enjoys

c. Verbs ending in o
When a verb ends in o, the letter e is added before the s ending. For example:

When a verb ends in a sibilant sound such as ch, s, sh, x or z, the letter e is added before the s ending. For example:

pass passes
push pushes
watch watches
fix fixes
buzz buzzes
