Title
An Empirical Analysis on Fraternity and Sorority Involvement as a Criminological
Antecedent as Perceived by the UST Legal Management Students

II. Rationale
Fraternities and sororities in the Philippines have always been imputed with
discerning issues regarding the purpose and legality of its existence. Most people
see these organizations masquerading as champions of brotherhood and sisterhood but
in actuality are promoting mafia-like practices and rituals such as the continued practice
of violent initiation rites and the exposure of conflicts between other fraternities that
usually result to grave brutality. This is in part driven by the paucity of scholarship on
fraternities and sororities, generally, especially among legal academics. Given this
perspective, the society has viewed fraternities and sororities as an indirect passage
towards a commission of crime.

III. Purpose
This study aims to provide a practical investigation concerning fraternities and sororities
and the issues that presently exist. It will tackle matters as to the logic of the students in
joining such organizations amidst the impeding risks that has been brought upon recent
happenings in our country and the legal remedies that our legislation has been working on
to further strengthen the existing mechanism for deterrence to the engagement of human
acts that are not in accordance with proper conduct.
