Powder
Solid dosage forms are three types
1. Powder 3. Tablet
2. Granules 4. Capsule
Powder: Powder is a solid substance that is composed of various particles of
different size. The particle size of normal powder is 1 to 10,000 m, and the particle
size of pharmaceutical powder is 0.1 to 10 m.
Uses of Powder:
a) Powder should be used itself as dosage form.
b) Should be used as stating or intermediate to prepare another dosage form.
Types of Powder:
A. On the Basis of Particle Size
1. Coarse Powder Particle size is large.
2. Moderately Coarse Powder Particle size is not so large as coarse powder.
3. Moderately Fine Powder Smaller than moderately coarse powder.
4. Very Fine Powder Particle size is so much small.
B. On the Basis of Use
1. Bulk Powder This type of powders are used for internal purposes.
Example ORS
2. Divided Powder This type of powders are used as individual doses. These
are generally dispended in papers, metal foils, properly folded.
Example Perdien powder, which is used for laxative purposes.
3. Dusting Powder This type of powders are used for external purposes like
lubricants, protective, absorbents, antiseptics, astringents.
Example Talc, boric acid, neomycin sulphate (Nabanol powder)
4. Dry Powder This type of powders are used for asthma patients.
Example Dry Powder Inhaler (DPI)
5. Powder to be Reconstitute: This type of powders has very low stability. For
that reason it is prepared before use and the stability of the preparation should
be well for certain time. Example Amoxicillin like dry syrup.

Granules: Aggregation of fine particles of powders, which required binders.
Agglomeration: Aggregation of fine particles of powders.
Granulation Technique: It is the process of forming granules by aggregation of fine
particles of powders, which requires binders.
The particle size range for Dosage form is 2.0 4.0 millimeter (mm)
The particle size range for tablet is 0.2 to 0.5 millimeter (mm)
Why we prepare granules when we have powders?
1. To avoid powder segregation.
2. To enhance the flow of powder.
3. Granules have higher porosity than powders.
4. To improve the compressibility of powders.
5. The granulation of toxic materials will reduce the hazard of generation of
toxic dust, which may arise during the handling of the powders.
Segregation: Separation of particles based on dimensions and densities.
Types/Methods of Granulation: Granulation methods can be divided into 2 types:
1. Dry granulation Process In the dry methods of granulation, the primary powder
particles are aggregated at high pressure. There are two main intermediate
processes.
(a) The slugging process where produce large size tablets (slug).
Particle size is 25mm
Thickness is 12 to 15 mm
(b) The roller compaction process where the powder is squeezed between two
rollers to produce a sheet of material
In both cases, the intermediate product is broken by suitable milling technique to
produce granules which is usually sieved to produce mono-sized granules.
Applicable for: Drugs which do not compress well after wet granulation or
Those which are sensitive to moisture.

2. Wet granulation Process Wet granulation involves the massing of a mix of dry
primary powder particles using a granulating fluid like water, ethanol and
isopropanol either alone or in combination. In the traditional wet granulation
method, the wet mass is forced through a sieve to produce wet granules which
are then dried. And by suitable sieving technique mono-sized granules are
formed.
