Cool Spring Park Arbor Day 2009

The cool, windy weather on Thursday April 23rd did not deter nearly 200 students and their teachers from William C. Lewis
School and St. Ann’s school to attend the Arbor Day 2009 and Tree City USA ceremony in Cool Spring Park. Students were
taught the basic needs of trees, learned how to plant a tree, witnessed tree climbing demonstrations, and talked about the impor-
tance of water safety. All Seasons Nursery, Delaware Forest Service, Erthnxt, The Nature Conservancy, A.A. Meyers, Inc.,
Kerns Brothers, Disabatino, Bartlett Trees, DCH Staff, DCH volunteers, Stay Free and Globalcurrents.com, all participated to
make sure the event was a success! We planted a total of 12 trees. Henry Poole from the Forest Service presented Romain Alex-
ander, Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation, with the 16th consecutive Tree City USA award for the City of Wil-
mington. Mr. Alexander gave a short, inspiring speech about the preservation of trees in Cool Spring Park and Delaware’s 108th
Arbor Day celebration came to a close.

Thanks to funding from the Wilmington Flower Market we were
able to hold a supplemental Arbor Day project with Nativity Prep.
School. 38 students, 8 teachers, 6 DCH staff, and 4 community
volunteers worked together to plant 10 new trees and care for the
existing trees on their campus on May 14, 2009.

Rain or Shine! Our hardy volunteers plant 25 new trees in

Speakman Park on the very wet May 2, 2009.
