Raghavan is a master of the mrdangam, the principal percussion instrument in the Camatic music tradition of South India. ‘This solo is based on mrdangam music taught to me by Raghavan while T was a graduate student in World Music at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. ‘The solo is for snare drum and two tom toms. The tom toms should be tuned a perfect fourth apart. Accompanying the solo partis an ostinato which begins 8 measures before the soto part starts, and continues throughout the piece. The ostinato ccan be played by the solo performer on foot pedal bass drum and high hat. Ttcan also be played by a second person on either foot pedal bass drum and high hat or bass ‘drum and cymbals together. The ostinato can also be played by two other people on bass drum and cymbals. ‘The total number of times a repeated section is to be played is indicated at the end of each section.
