Abstract
Salinity is a major problem in Pakistan as 6.67 million hectares of land is affected by it causing a
loss of 20 billion rupees annually due to decreased crop yield. Low water absorption by seeds
resulting a decrease in seed germination is due to salinity as various enzymatic activities are
affected by low water availability during germination. An experiment was conducted in saline to
see the effect of salinity and soaking time on germination of three wheat genotypes i.e. Pasban
90, SARC-1 and LU 26-S at two salinity levels (5dSm1 and 10dSm1). Seeds were placed on the
filter paper in trays, using completely randomized design (CRD) with twelve repeats. Before
placing seeds of each genotype were soaked for 0, 16, 24 and 32 hours. SARC-1 was found to be
the best salt tolerant variety showing 75 and 60% germination followed by LU26-S (70 and
55%) under 5dSm1 and 10dSm1 respectively. Results also revealed that germination percentage
was significantly approved than control (unsoaked). Among soaking time treatments 24 hours
was
found to be the best for all wheat genotypes.
