Vocabulary Lesson Reflection

Last class, we were given five vocabulary words that we didnt know the meaning to so

our job was to look up the definition and teach the words to our students. But you couldnt just

say the word and its definition. We were to ask our students if they could use two different

words in sentences. If they couldnt use it then we were to come up with a way to teach them the

meaning of the word without giving it away. Visuals that I used in my vocabulary lesson were to

have the students write a sentence with the word in it and use context clues to figure out what

the word means. I thought this strategy was very successful and the students were able to

figure out the meaning very easily. After the lesson, I believe I achieved my objective and my

goal of the students learning new words in a very short amount of time. I could tell I met my

objective because after the students used context clues and saw the word in the sentence they

were able to figure out the meaning to both words I was teaching. What this activity meant to me

as a classroom teacher teaching vocabulary, especially in regards to ELL students, was that there

are many different ways you can teach vocabulary and you can easily modify vocabulary lessons

depending on each individual students strengths and weaknesses.
