Electrolysis

Splitting water molecules using electricity in to H2 and O2 is known as electrolysis. Actually, it is

the reverse of the operation of hydrogen fuel cell. Electricity supplied to anode and cathode in
order to beak water molecules to hydrogen and oxygen. Cathode removes hydrogen.

Steam reforming of naphtha or natural gas

Steam reforming of naphtha or natural gas is the cheapest, and most efficient way to produce
hydrogen. Supplied natural gas or naphtha is reacted with steam in high temperatures and pressures
inside a steam reformer. Resultant gas stream contains CO, H2 and CO2 which is called synthesis
gas. H2 is separated from the synthesis gas by absorption. Following reaction happens in a steam
reformer.

Renewable liquid reforming

Renewable liquid reforming uses the same principle as the natural gas reforming. Renewable
liquids like ethanol allowed to react with steam and generate H2.

Fermentation

Biologically convert biomass to sugar rich feedstock which can produce H2 by fermentation
