Understanding Computing Power

Power of CPU (Central Processing Unit)

Measurement unit: Hz (hertz) or MHz, GHz
One hertz = one instruction/second
So 3.2 GHz = 3,200,000,000 instructions/second
Or 3,200 MIPS (Million Instructions per Second)

Question: How much data can a 3.2 GHz CPU process in one second?
Depends on how much each instruction handles
Common CPU structure: 32-bit or 64-bit
32-bit: each instruction processes 32 bits of data
64-bit: each instruction processes 64 bits of data

SETI: Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence

To tease out the weakest signals, a great amount of computer power is
necessary. It would take a monstrous supercomputer to get the job
done. SETI programs could never afford to build or buy that computing
power... What if they used LOTS of small computers, all working
simultaneously on different parts of the analysis?
