cannot. Unlike jars, these impulses do not deliver high-impact, ham-
mering effects on the fish. RatPACK can often recover a fish in minutes
compared to conventional methods, which can take hours or even days. Safety Joint
These impulses can reduce friction by as much as a factor of 100, exces-
sive overpulling, which can stick the packer tighter or part weakened
tubing, is not necessary. This also reduces load factors on the workstring

and service rig.

RatPACK is run on a BHA directly above the engaging device. This Tubing
provides a significant performance advantage over surface vibration
systems.

RatPACK has an outstanding success record worldwide.
Stuck packer set at 11,150 ft Twenty-eight days of trying conventional fish-
ing methods failed to retrieve a packer in service since 1971 that was stuck
below a set of perfs. Baker Oil Tools personnel made up a 4-11/16 in. OD over-
shot to catch the 3-1/16 in. OD, 2-3/8 in. EUE 8 RD tubing collar, drain sub,
RatPACK and XO back to 2-7/8 in. PH-6. They ran the tools in the hole to top
of fish at 10,910 ft. They engaged the fish with the overshot and pulled 8,000 lb
over string weight. After hooking onto the pump, they pumped 2.5 bpm at
1,800 psi. The fish started moving in 15 seconds. They kept 8,000 lb overpull
on fish and had a steady pull with the fish moving. The fish moved 28 ft in 2
minutes and stopped. They ran at that spot for 10 minutes with no movement
and lost circulation. They set 10,000 lb down on the fish and worked it back
down 28 ft, then pulled back up and stopped at the same spot. They worked the
fish past the tight spot, the fish jumped, pulled free for 40 ft, was worked past
casing collars for 4,000 ft, and retrieved.

Retrievable packer set at 13,267 ft The operator had been fishing a retriev-
able packer for several weeks and had burned over the packer above it with
numerous washover shoes, after several attempts to jar the top packer free.
They attempted to retrieve the lower packer by conventional means and had
also run a competitors surface vibration tool, with no success. Baker Oil Tools
ran the RatPACK, latched the tubing 87 ft above the packer and freed the stuck
packer in less then five minutes.

Dual packer with pitted and gas-cut tubing Because of its condition, pulling the tubing to
retrieve this packer would cause it to part. The operator chose RatPACK because it does not
require the amount of drill collar or overpull weight needed with jars. The tool was picked
up with a 5-3/4 in. overshot and 2-7/8 in. tubing only, and the long string was engaged at
8,438 ft. The top of the short string was at 8,515 ft, and the packer was at 8,675 ft. After an
initial overpull of 10,000 lb, a maximum overpull of 25,000 lb was applied. RatPACK was
activated by pumping workover fluid through the tool. The packer came free in five minutes.
The fish continued to hang up in sand and debris that had settled on top of the packer. Rat-
PACK was activated each time and immediately freed the fish, without excessive overpull.
The packer and tubing were recovered. The tubing was in such bad shape that it broke apart
when power tongs were used to break connections at surface.

Packer at 942 ft with 35 ft of tubing and heavy scale buildup The operator had made
a cut at 907 ft, which left one joint plus 2 ft of 2-7/8 in. tubing and the packer in the hole.
The tubing joint had scale buildup out to the casing ID. Six ceramic centralizer blades were
also lost in the hole. RatPACK made up in the BHA with an overshot and latched onto the
fish, and 20,000 lb was pulled on the fish. Overpull was then slacked off to 4,000 lb and the
RatPACK was activated for 10 minutes. This was followed by pulling sequences of 10,000 lb

for 5 minutes, 20,000 lb for 5 minutes, 30,000 lb for 5 minutes, 40,000 lb for 5 minutes, and
50,000 lb for five minutes. After a total RatPACK time of 30 minutes, the fish came free.

Packer at 942 ft with 37 ft of 2-7/8 in. tubing The operator made a chemical cut at 905 ft.
After pulling out of hole, scale was found on the last joint of tubing. A shoe and one joint
of washpipe was picked up. After tagging up at 875 ft and washing to packer at 942 feet,
RatPACK made up on the BHA and fish latched. The tubing and packer were recovered in
15 minutes.
