FIXED BEAM
To solve fixed beam by first principle remember two relations
1. Area of Simply Supported BMD = Area of Fixed End BMD
2. C.G. of Simply Supported BMD = C.G. of Fixed End BMD
In other words you can also use two simple relations,

1. MA+MB=

2. MA+2MB=

Where, a= Area of Simply Supported BMD and = C. G. of Simply Supported BMD, and
L= Span of the Beam.
Illustrated Example:
1. Solve By First Principle

20kN

1m 3m

Solution:

15 kN m

S. S. BMD

MB

MA

FIXED BMD

B.M under the point load =  = 1513
4
=15 kN M
As the loading is not symmetrical, Fixed End BMD is a TRAPEZOID. Looking at the Simply
Supported BMD it is clear that MA>MB.

Now, using First Principle,

1. MA+MB=

2. MA+2MB=

a =1/2 x 4x 15 =30, L= 4

= C.G. of Simply Supported BMD from left end

= = =1.67

Putting these values in the equations.

1. MA+MB= = -15

.
2. MA+2MB= = -18.75

Solving above two simultaneous equations we get,

MB = -3.75 kN M (Negative because its Hogging. Moment)
MA = -11.25kN M (Negative because its Hogging. Moment)
