Banking & Financial Awareness

1. The Indian Council for Agricultural Research(ICAR) will be undertaking major research works on agriculture this year
with the World Bank fund of ______1100 crore rupees.
Note:
The funds will be allocated to ten each of the premier agricultural and veterinary universities in the country.
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is an autonomous body responsible for co-ordinating
agricultural education and research in India.
2. How many black Money has been disclosed by 21 thousand people under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojna (PMGKY)
till 31st March this year____4,900 crore rupees.
Note:
The stash money declaration window announced by the govt. post demonetisation.
The Income Tax Department has collected a tax of 2,451 crore rupees till now from these declarations.
The scheme was launched in December 2016 by the government to enable people with black money to come clean
by paying tax and penalty of 50 per cent.
3. Punjab National Bank (PNB) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) join hands to roll out open mobile wallet across 10
states in the country___ Speedpay.
Note:
Now, BSNL will expand Speed pay services in Punjab, Chandigarh (UT), Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal
Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Uttarakhand.
PNB's Speedway wallet will operate like any other mobile wallet for paying bills, recharging phone besides its
users will be able to deposit and withdraw money from authorized retail outlets.
4. The bank has entered into an agreement with Bharat Financial Inclusion to evaluate a potential merger between the two
companies ____ IndusInd Bank.
Note:
Microfinance company Bharat Financial Inclusion (formerly known as SKS Microfinance) is on the block.
IndusInd Bank management has been authorized to explore strategic opportunities for the expansion of its
business and to assess the viability of strategic partnership, collaboration, or restructuring opportunities.
5. State-run corporation is all set to become a Maharatna company (presently Navratna firm) ____ Bharat Petroleum
Corporation (BPCL).
Note:
A firm is eligible for Maharatna status if it is already a listed Navratna firm, has an average turnover, net worth,
and annual net profit after tax of at least Rs 25,000 crore, Rs 15,000 crore and Rs 5,000 crore, respectively, in
the last three years.
At present, there are seven Maharatna companies, Bharat Heavy Electricals, Coal India, GAIL (India), Indian Oil
Corporation, NTPC, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation and Steel Authority of India.
6. The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has raised the upper age limit for joining the National
Pension Scheme (NPS) existing 60-years to ______65 years.
Note:
The scheme has the option of continuing and making contributions up to the age of 70.

National Pension System (NPS) is a low cost, tax-efficient and flexible retirement savings scheme launched by the
government of India (GoI).
7. The country's industrial production grew in July this year___1.2%.
Note:
According to the Central Statistics Office data, Manufacturing output grew 0.1% in July and electricity generation
increased 6.5 %.
Capital goods output contracted 1% in July.
Industrial output had grown 4.5% in July last year and contracted 0.2% in June this year.
Consumer durables output shrank 1.3%, but production of consumer non-durables rose 3.4% in July.
8. Who will head the newly constituted Group of Ministers (GoM) to monitor and resolve the IT challenges faced in the
implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST)____Sushil Kumar Modi.
9. The Union Cabinet has approved the release of an additional how many percentage of dearness allowance (DA) to Central
government employees________1%
Note:
This will benefit about 49.26 lakh Central government employees.
The Cabinet also approved a proposed law amendment to double the maximum gratuity payout to private sector
workers from Rs. 10 lakhs to Rs. 20 lakhs.
10. Telecom operator has announced strategic partnership with South Korean telecom operator SK Telecom for using latest
technologies ___Bharti Airtel.
Note:
The companies will jointly work towards building an enabling ecosystem for the introduction of these
technologies in the Indian context.
SK Telecom is Koreas largest telecommunications company with more than 29 million mobile subscribers, which
accounts for around 50% of the total market.
11. Who gearing up to provide its financial services through all of 1.55 lakh post offices and 3 lakh employees by the end of
2018___ India Post Payments Bank (IPPB).
Note:
It will create India's second-largest payments bank in terms of reach.
The new model of banking allows mobile firms, supermarket chains and others to cater to banking requirements
of individuals and small businesses.
12. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will introduce 100 rupees coin to mark the birth centenary of AIADMK founder, former
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister _____Late Dr. M G Ramachandran.
Note:
The Reserve Bank of India will also issue new Rs 5 and Rs 10 coins.
The new Rs. 5 coins will be 23 milli meters in diameter and made of copper (75%), zinc (20%) and nickel (5%).
The standard weight of Rs 100 coin will be made of 35 grams while that of Rs 5 coin will be 6 grams.

1. Who has been unanimously elected as the Chairman of Press Trust of India (PTI)____ Viveck Goenka.
Note:
He succeeds Riyad Mathew of the Malayala Manorama group.
Press Trust of India (PTI) is the news agency in India,headquartered in New Delhi and is a non-profit cooperative
among more than 500 Indian newspapers.
2. The union govt. has appointed interim GSTN Chairman____ A.B Panday.
Note:
The union govt. has given Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) CEO A.B. Pandey additional charge of
Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN).

This firm provides information technology (IT) backbone and portal for registration and tax returns under the GST

3. Former speaker of Singapores parliament has been declared as the President of Singapore___ Mdm Halimah Yacob.

She will become the countrys first female President and second Malay president for Singapore.

only one candidate stands nominated at end of nomination period.
4. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed the first special envoy for the oceans____ Peter Thomson.
Note:
Peter Thomson played a leading role at the first-ever UN conference on oceans in June.
The 193 UN member states issued an urgent call for action to reverse the decline in the health and productivity of
the world's oceans.
5. The chairman-cum-managing director (CMD) of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) Ltd. for five

Note:
Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is a subsidiary of the Indian Railways that handles the

1. The veteran Kannada actor, producer and singer who passed away in Bengaluru, Karnataka____ Rattihalli Nagendra
Sudarshan.
Note:
In his five-decade film career he acted in Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, and Malayalam films.
2. Veteran actor passed away during open heart surgery in New Jersey ____Frank Vincent.
Note:
He is known for his role in films like The Sopranos and Goodfellas.
Vincent most notably appeared as Tony Sopranos arch nemesis, Phil Leotardo in the The Sopranos starting in
season five and until the series conclusion in 2007.

1. Indian Badminton legend will receive Badminton Association of Indias (BAI)first lifetime achievement award for his
contribution to Badminton ____Prakash Padukone.
Note:
The award carries cash prize of 10 lakh rupees with a citation.
Padukone had won the 1980 All England, besides bagging a bronze at the 1983 World Championship in
Copenhagen and a gold medal at the 1978 Commonwealth Games.
He was bestowed with the Arjuna award (1972) and the Padma Shri (1982).
2. According the 2018 Times Higher Education (THE) World university ranking, Indian university has been names the top
university in India_____ IISc-Bangalore.
Note:
The University of Oxford has retained its first place in the rankings, followed by University of Cambridge,

1. India and Sri Lankan joint maritime naval 7th Edition exercise has begun at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh ____SLINEX
2017.
Note:
The exercise will be concluded on 14th September this year.
The exercises were held in both Harbour Phase (professional, cultural, and social interactions) and Sea Phase
(anti-piracy exercises, cross-deck helicopter operations, gun firings and anti-surface exercises).
2. The union minister has inaugurated the new head quarter building of Bureau of Police Research and Development
(BPR&D) in New Delhi_______ Rajnath Singh.
Note:
BPR&D was set up in 1970 to identify the needs and problems of the police in the country.
The Bureau undertake research projects and studies, and suggest modalities to overcome problems and challenges
and meet the needs and requirements of the police.
3. The union govt. allowed import of 3 lakh metric tonnes of raw sugar at concessional duty of _______25%.
Note:
The import shall be open to millers and refiners who have their own capacity to convert raw sugar into refined.
The imports will be allowed through the ports Tuticorin, Karaikal, Chennai, Mangalore, Kakinada, Gangavaram and
Vishakapatnam in the South.
4. According to the govt. report, the Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY) has helped in creating jobs ____5.5 crore.
Note:
Around Rs 3.42 lakh crore loan has been disbursed to over 8 crore people under the scheme (mostly small
entrepreneurs).
MUDRA loan is available for non-agricultural activities (like dairy, poultry, bee-keeping) for up to Rs 10 lakh.
5. Who has successfully test fired 3rd generation Anti-Tank Guided Missile (ATGM) 'Nag' ____ Defence Research and

Note:
The first successful flight test of NAG missile was carried out in June 2017.

The food regulator asked the state govt. to adopt this system as it would help eliminate discrepancy and make food
safety officers accountable.
The system will ease out the process of sample collection, make it transparent and traceable and controls the

10. Telecom company has launched Voice over LTE (VoLTE) services in Mumbai _____Bharti Airtel.
Note:
VoLTE (works over 4G) will offer High Definition (HD) voice calls along with faster call set up time.
Voice over Long-Term Evolution (VoLTE) is a standard for high-speed wireless communication for mobile phones
and data terminals.
VoLTE has up to three times more voice and data capacity than 3G UMTS and up to six times more than 2G GSM.
11. The online facility has been launched by the Union government to resolve foreign trade issues____ Contact@DGFT.
Note:
The Union government has set up an online service facility that can be used by importers and exporters to resolve
all foreign trade-related issues.
Traders can raise all matters related to the directorate or other agencies of the Centre and States through this
facility activated at the DGFT website.
12. Indias first Hyperloop project will come up in the state_____ Andhra Pradesh.
Note:
The Hyperloop Technology is a brainchild idea of Tesla founder Elon Musk, who dubs it as the 5th mode of
transportation.
13. The Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju has launched BSF Half Marathon online registration portal at a function
in New Delhi _____ www.marathon.bsf.gov.in.
Note:
The marathon will be held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi on 22nd October.
It will be dedicated to martyrs and BSF will facilitate their family members on the occasion.
14. Who laid the foundation stone for countrys first green-field city in Ranchi on the Heavy Engineering Corporation (HEC)

16. According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) report, India's telecom subscriber base dipped marginally
in July this year by 1.3 lakh to _____121.07 crore.

The landline or fixed line customer base declined to 2.39 crore from 2.4 crore.
17. The Tribunal has refused to lift ban on 10-year-old diesel vehicles in the Delhi-National Capital Region____ National Green
Tribunal (NGT).
Note:
The NGT has also dismissed the Centre's plea seeking modification of its ban order on diesel vehicles.
According to the NGT, one diesel vehicle causes pollution equal to 24 petrol vehicles and 40 CNG vehicles.

States News

1. The state govt. has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Google India to take Internet connectivity to the
remotest part of the state______ Assam govt.
Note:
Through the MoU with Google, Assam govt. would work to provide Internet connection to 26,000 villages and
1,500 tea garden areas to increase digital literacy.
The MoU would be used as a launch pad to materialise the state government's vision of women empowerment,
skill development and universal education.
2. The state govt. has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the US-based Hyperloop Transportation
Technologies (HTT) to build India's first Hyperloop system_____ Andhra Pradesh govt.
Note:
Hyperloop will cover 35 km distance between Vijayawada and Amaravati only in five minutes.
Hyperloop is a transportation system which proposes to propel a pod-like vehicle through a near-vacuum tube at
more than airline speed.
Hyperloop is faster than fastest high-speed rail and claimed to have speeds even greater than commercial air
travel.
3. The state govt. has hiked the Freedom Fighters pension from 12-thousand rupees to thirteen thousand rupees per month
_____ Tamil Nadu govt.
Note:
According to an order by the Public Department, family pension to their eligible heirs would be enhanced from
6000 rupees to 6500 rupees with retrospective effect from the 15th August.
4. The state govt. will start implementing Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) under MGNREGA to ensure transparency and check
corruption at all levels_____ Nagaland govt.
Note:
Wages of the MGNREGA workers will be directly credited to the individual accounts of the job card holders
through National Electronic Fund Management System or Public Financial Management System.
To avail the benefit, every job card holder must have a bank account duly linked with Aadhaar.
5. The state govt. has announced 1 lakh Rupees cash reward to those providing information about the administrators and
curators of the deadly Blue Whale Challenge ____Gujarat govt.

The cyber cell of the Gujarat police has launched a helpline number (079-22871917) for anyone seeking
information on the online game.
The Blue Whale challenge is undertaken using social media apps, online gaming groups, online community
messaging groups, and so on, where a certain administrator or curator targets the vulnerable young player
through private chat platform.
6. The state govt. will provide skill development training to 30 thousand surrendered militants____ Assam govt.
Note:
Another 24 thousand youths in Assam will be trained under the Prime Minister Kaushal Vikash Yojna.
The Assam Skill Development Mission will provide skill training in 40 sectors.
The cost of the skill development training program will be borne by the state and Centre govt.
7. The state govt. and Mother Dairy Fruit & Vegetable Pvt. Ltd have signed a lease agreement to set up a state of the art milk
and milk products processing plant___ Maharashtra Govt.
Note:
As per the MoU, a dairy development initiative will begin in Vidarbha and Marathwada regions in the state to
provide access to milk producers to markets in Nagpur and Mumbai.
The Maharashtra govt. will provide assistance, including funds, for a coordinated approach to improve
productivity through animal breeding, nutrition, and health.
8. The state govt. has declared 96 tehsils of 21 districts across the state as drought-hit in view of deficient rainfall ___
Chhattisgarh govt.
Note:
These tehsils would not have sufficient crop yield as per 'Aanawari', which is a measure of crop yield in farms.
As per the provisions of revenue book circular, compensation will be distributed to farmers of the drought-hit
areas.

1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the 2,500-years-old Temple located at the west of the Royal Lake in Yangon
______Shwedagon pagoda.
Note:
Shwedagon Pagoda is covered with hundreds of gold plates and the top of the stupa is encrusted with 4,531
diamonds, the largest of which is a 72-carat diamond.
Shwedagon Pagoda is considered to be the most sacred and impressive Buddhist site for the Myanmarese people.
2. A joint military training exercise between India and US will be conducted at Joint Base Lewis McChord, Washington (USA)
from 14 to 27th Sep this year ______Yudh Abhyas -2017.
Note:
This will be the 13th edition of the joint exercise hosted alternately between the two countries.
The exercise Yudh Abhyas will provide an opportunity to the armed forces of both countries to train in an
integrated manner at Battalion level with joint planning at Brigade level.
3. President of Belarus arrived on a two day visit to India ____ AG Lukashenko.
Note:
The two sides are expected to discuss bilateral cooperation in defence and security, trade and investment, science
and technology and people to people exchanges.
4. The Sahara Forest Project signs deal to realize facility in ____ Jordan.
Note:
With funding from the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment and Grieg Foundation the Sahara Forest
Project starts building in Aqaba (Aqaba is a Jordanian port city on the Red Sea's Gulf of Aqaba).
The facility, part of the Sahara Forest Project (SFP), produces energy, freshwater and food and all this in an arid
desert.
5. The South Asian Women Development Forum (SAWDF) has organized the two days Across Barriers-International
Business Womens Summit at _____Kathmandu, Nepal.
Note:
The event aims to encourage partnerships between women entrepreneurs from the SAARC and ASEAN member
countries and China.
The basic objective is to bring together people from different sectors on a single platform and enable them to
share their knowledge, skills, experience, and ideas.
6. The President of the country has signed the Gazette notification to operationalize the Office on Missing Persons (OMP)
_____ Maithripala Sirisena (Sri Lanka).

Earlier, United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has urged Sri Lankan govt. to swiftly operationalize the
OMP, meant for probing into disappearances of thousands of people during and after LTTE war.
The bill in this regard was passed last August but it took more than a year to put it in place.
7. An extremely powerful tropical cyclone affecting the Leeward Islands and Puerto Rico, and threatening Cuba and the
South-eastern United States___ Hurricane Irma.

8. India has started operation to provided assistance to Bangladesh in response to the humanitarian crisis being faced due to
the large influx of Rohingya refugees into that country from Myanmar___ Operation Insaniyat.
Note:
Under it, relief material consisting of items including rice, pulses, sugar, salt, cooking oil, biscuits and mosquito
nets will be provided to the affected people.
The relief material will be delivered in multiple consignments, and the first tranche will be brought to Chittagong
by an Indian Air Force plane.

1. The country will host the 2019 edition of the Commonwealth (Youth, Junior and Senior) Weightlifting Championships____
India.
Note:
The Executive Board of Commonwealth Weightlifting Federation met at Gold Coast, Australia and decided to allot
the 2019 edition of the competitions to India.
The current edition of the tournament is being held at the Gold Coast, Australia.
2. Indian weightlifters Rahul have qualified for next year's Commonwealth Games after winning a gold medal each in their
respective weight divisions_____Sivalingam Sathish Kumar and Ragala Venkat.
Note;
Rahul created new records en-route to his standout total lift of 351 kilogram (156kg in snatch and195 kilograms
in clean & jerk).
Sathish Kumar (Games gold medallist -2014 Commonwealth) lifted 148 kilograms in snatch and 172 kilograms in
clean & jerk for a total effort of 320 kilograms in senior men's 77 kilograms.
3. Who has released its first ever players handbook '100 things every professional cricketer must know' in New Delhi
___Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Note:
The book was released by the Committee of Administrators (COA) and is in line with the recommendations of the
Lodha panel.
The document will be the official handbook for all the cricketers registered with the BCCI.
The book has 10 sections covering topics ranging from money management to injury management.
4. A Spanish professional tennis player has defeated Kevin Anderson (South Africa) to claim US Open tennis tournament-

It is Nadal's second Grand Slam title of the year and 16th overall.
5. American tennis player defeated Madison Keys to win 2017 US Open Women's Singles title___ Sloane Stephens.
Note:
The US Open is owned and organized by a not-for-profit organization United States Tennis Association (USTA).
6. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Senior Badminton Championship has begun at ____Kochi
Note:
A total of 665 players (175-Indian players) from forty countries in eight different groups are participating in the
week-long Championship.
It is for the first time the Championship is being held in India.
7. India finishes in medals tally with one gold and two silver medals at Moscow Shotgun World Championships_____ fifth.
Note:
Italy topped the tally with nine gold medals for a total of 17 medals in all and USA (12 medals) -2nd.
8. Who has lead Indian challenge at Korea Super Series, in Seoul, South Korea _____P V Sindhu.

9. The state has won the Chief Minister's cup with 45 gold medals at the National kickboxing championship being held in
Raipur_____ Maharashtra.

Chhattisgarh secured second position with 27 gold and Haryana third with 15 gold medals.

10. The country to host Junior Asian Wrestling Championship (JAWC)- 2018____ India.

India will host the Junior Asian Wrestling Championship (JAWC)- 2018, which is scheduled to be held from 19 to

11. The new chief coach of the Indian Senior Men Hockey Team____ Sjoerd Marijne.
Note:
Currently, Marijne is the chief coach of Indian Senior Women Hockey Team.
He will succeed Roelant Oltmans.
12. The four-day annual Border Security Force (BSF) sports meet has begun in ____Jammu.
Note:
The Inter-Frontier Sports Competition of the Border Security Force is aimed at preparing the Jawans for national
and international-level championships.
