In this chapter, we explain how to edit or create sounds on the EW13020m. ‘The EW13020m is a monophonic analog synthesizer that produces a single tone at atime. Itis simple but flexible due to its versatile features to create sounds; For instance, it ean process or mix the sound from. the EXT.IN jack on the ear panel. If you wish, you can use a human voice as a sound source! Before starting creating sounds, lear some basics of the synthesizer and the EWI3020m. ep What is a Synthesizer? Sounds consist of three factors: pitch, tone, and volume. Pitch: Height ofthe sound Tone: Amount of harmonics the sound incorporates Volume: Loudness of the sound ‘Sounds peculiar to acoustic instruments are formed by time variance (called “envelope”) of above three factors. Especially, the envelopes of tone and volume determine the character of a sound. ‘The envelopes for acoustic instruments can be classified into four distinctive types: > > 81 Percussion/srack {2 Strings ‘ArAttack ine D=Decry tine Sessa eel ReRelese tne 13 Stringspizsionto 1 Windsbiown a) Reser naa ‘These envelopes generally indicate volume of sounds, When a level changes, harmonics also changes in the same way: © it setter cme When keel so, here is es harmonic 23 ‘Synthesizer is a machine that artificially creates a sound using Oscillator, Filter, and Amplifier that correspond to three sound factors—pitch, tone, and volume respectively, plus Modulators such as Envelope Generator (EG) that determines the time variance of them, ot Low Frequency Oscillator (LFO) that gives the factors additional expressions. ‘That is, audio signal output from Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) is processed in its harmonic ‘configuration by Voltage Controlled Filter (VCF), then determined in its volume by Voltage Controlled ‘Amplifier (VCA). Simultaneously, EG and LFO modulate VCO, VCF, VCA to give expressions to a sound that is finally produced. ‘This is atypical process to create a “synthesized” sound. However, you cannot play that sound without a controller that enables to play in any key scale and pitch. ‘You can recognize many synthesizers adopted with keyboard type controllers as the EW13020m uses a Wind instrument type controller (EW13020), Additionally, a key scale and pitch are determined by Controlled Voltage (CV) from the controller, which directly control the VCO, VCF, and VCA (plus modulators). o | vco jf oH output _ f r a) VCO: Vatuge Cote Oscittor VCE: Vatage Conrad Fer VA: tg Cored Ampier £G: Eee Genetor 120: Ln Freuecy Oxcitor Cv: Conrad Vatge Tiger: “Trger seal riggers he sound patton. es ol enol ethan agreed 24 @®D Structure of the EWI3020m ‘The EW13020m has 2 VCOs, 1 VCF and 1 VCA. However, to fully control or play out a sound using the 'EW13020 controler, read through this section before editing sounds ‘There are two typical methods to edit sounds on the instrument: * To apply “on-the-fly” envelopes by breath contro! Itis one of the most suitable methods for the EW13020 so that it gives you the same playability 4 you play acoustic wind instruments. In this method, you do not have to use any EG settings toplay with sounds because you can control the cu-off frequency and resonance of VCF, output level of VCA, etc, by your breath control VCO-A ver tf az lend VCo.B BREATH + To apply preset envelopes using EG {a usual method for editing sounds as onthe ordinary synthesizer. You can even play sound «effects, percussive tones or different kinds of sounds other than wind instruments by controlling the minimum elements for expressions—dynamics by breath, vibrato effect, etc VCO-A VCO-B Above two suggestions are quite Parameters, it still has the free-assignable modulation system that may bring sounds beyond our ‘imagination, If you get ideas about how a basic sound is programmed and how itis brushed up with the ‘modulation system, you can easily make a shape of the sound you imagine, Otherwise, you cannot ever have a sound that you want. The value “OO” will require that you should blow too strongly. Oppositely, the value "99" brings no effect even if you adjust your breath. You should setthe cut-off frequency Value within a range ‘9 "00" to around “50”, with which you can easily play and obtain adesied tone. However, here you should select a value “10” to “20” because you had better try adding a resonant tone in next setting. vcr Resonance is, as described before, the parameter that emphasizes the harmonics in the band around the cut-off frequency, which help you produce a unique sound such as human voice, ec. Recall “VCF:RESONANCE” to set the value, The larger value is set, the more harmonic emphasis is obtained. If the value is too large, VCF will be sef-oscllated and produce a quite unique tone possible to be used as a sound effect. Set a desired value considering the tendency of VCF caused by the "VCF:RESONANCE" parameter. UCF? RESONANCE=48 This parameter adjusts the balance of harmonics between the lower key range and higher key range, by changing the cut-off frequency according tothe played notes. Recall “VCF-FOLLOW" tosetthe value thataverages the differencein tones. The value"00" will produce no effect. UCF?FOLLOW = +50 ‘This completes how you edit a sound to apply “on-the-fly” envelopes by breath control. Its, however, ‘atypical example so that you may find useful settings other than described, and so you should. Also, we recommend that you should try a mixed sound from VCO-A and VCO-B or other modulation settings-— LFO, FM, etc. 2.7.2 Applying Preset Envelopes using EGs 1 Solect20: Simple" in Sound modo, for onsy cng. Use aMIDI cable o connect the MIDI OUT on the EW13020m to the MIDI IN on the external MIDI sound ‘module, Also use a mixer to connect the LINE OUTs of both instrument if you need a well-balanced sound. MIDIIN iprour aa} ‘MIDI ound mule neour Jeneour , ‘Required settings in this application are; matching the Transmission Channel on the EW13020m and the Reception Channel on the extemal MIDT sound module; arranging sounds (voices) on both instruments toselect a desired combination by a single Program Change from the EW13020m (especially when mixing ‘them using a mixer). You should remember that you can even control the external MIDI sound module using the Breath (for assigned Control Change), Pitch Bend Change, Glide, et., from the EWI3020 controller. {2 Fortis application you shoud care about parameters regarding pitches—master tuning, pitch bend ranges, eon both instruments. 59 Te 3.4.2 Playing with a processed EXTIN sound {fyeuinputan extemal sound line level) tothe EXT.IN jock onthe EW13020m rear panel, youcan process it using VCF. Step 3: Select the preset sound bank #49 or #50 ($49 or $50) for an audi input from the EXT.IN jack. Now the LINE OUT signal from the MIDI sound module is ready o be processed and played. ‘MIDI sound module Se Vea yoos 4" LINEOUT ‘Step 4: Adjusttheinputlevel ofthe EXT.IN using the EXT.IN knob on the front pane! of the EW13020m. ‘Step 5: Tey playing on the EW13020 controller. You can have a sound breath-contrlled because the MOD parameters—"(BRTH)->VCF", “[BRTH]->VCA"—have appropriately been programmed. Youcanadjustthe VCF parameters, “VCF:CUTOFF" and" VCF:RESONANCE", for variations ofthe tone, Use the EXT.IN jack skillfully to play voices from extemal MIDI-compatible synthesizers or digital samplers for richer expression. Also set up the MIDU/Setup parameters if necessary, a 3.4.3 Using the EWI3020m as a MIDI Slave ‘As the EW13020m operates with the EW13020 controller, we described previous two applications in use ‘of the EW13020m as a MIDI master that controls other MIDI devices. We describe another application, hhowever, in use of the EW13020m as a MIDI slave module under control of an external MIDI keyboard, tc. This application is very useful when you need a heavy bass or lead sound from the analog synthesizer. ‘Step 1: Use a MIDI cable to connect the MIDI OUT on the MIDI keyboard and the MIDI IN on the EW13020m. Also connect both instruments to the mixer or amplifier. If necessary, you can Connect the MIDI THRU on the EW13020m and the MIDI IN on another slave instrument for ‘multiple performance. ‘T'n this application, you should not use the EWI3020 contol. Set Program Change to enable status “PROG,CHANGE" to “RX" or "ALL" on the EWI3020m). Step 3: Select sound applied with preset envelopes by EGs (page 47). Setup parameters for Pitch Bend Range (“BEND UP" & “BEND DW" of VCO-A & VCO-B), etc, and then ty playing. {2 Forthis application, you should care about paramoters regarding pichee—master tuning, pch bend ranges, tc, on both instruments, Even when using the EW13020m as a sound module under control of the MIDI master, it still offers versatility. If you play the MIDI keyboard using a modulation wheel or after touch function, the EW13020m will answer it with “BREATH” respectively set to“ MOD. WHEEL" or “PRESSURE” in the MIDI parameter group, as controlled by the EW13020. In this point, sounds for “on-the-fly” envelopes can be played in the same way. If the MIDI keyboard produces a digital sound (PCM or sampled one), you can create a fat sound by effectively mixing both digital and analog sounds from the keyboard and EW13020m. ‘Above three examples are typical applications in use of the EW13020m in MIDI connection. However, Possible MIDI applications still remain; If you connect a MIDI sequencer tothe EW13020m's MIDI OUT. ‘youcan record your performance on the EW13020 controller, along with polyphonic MIDI notes as chords tis you tha find your own way and make the most of EWI system. 61 ee @D Handling Bulk Data ‘This function allows for transferring sound data in user sound banks between the EW13020m and another EW13020m, MIDI recorder, etc., as MIDI system exclusive messages. We use a "MIDI recorder” in following instructions. [Bulk Send (Transmission)] Step Press the MIDI button to enter MIDUSetup mode, then the numeric key <3> to recall the bulk send screen, Set up the MIDI recorder. Also make sure the MIDI connection (ftom the EW13020m's MIDI OUT tothe receiver's MIDI IN), ALL BULK SEND ? Set up the MIDI recorder for data transfer. BULK RX = VERIFY ‘Step 3:_ Start data transfer on the MIDI recorder. When the EW13020m receives that dat, the display shows the following screen, DATA VERIFVING. ‘Step 4: When the verification is complete, the display shows the following screen, DATA VERIFY OK * Ifthe display shows the following screen, check the MIDI connection and redo verification. Incase the display shows the same message again, you should redo from “bulk send’ operations, !! FAILED !! * With the “BULK RX = VERIFY” status, you can verify the data each time you send it from the MIDI recorder, even in Sound or Edit mode. [Bulk Load (Reception)} ‘Step 1: Connect the EW13020m's MIDI IN and MIDI recorders MIDI OUT with a MIDI cable, Step 2: Press the MIDI button to enter MIDU/Setup mode, then the numeric key <4>, and recall the bulk load sereen using the VALUE — button. Set up the MIDI recorder for data transfer. BULK RX = WRITE ‘Step 3: Start data transfer on the MIDI recorder. When the EW13020m receives that data, the display shows the following screen, DATA RECIEVING. . ‘When the data transfer is complete, the display shows the previous screen, * Ifthe display shows the following screen, check the MIDI connection. Tur the EW13020m off, then ‘on, and redo data transfer. '! FAILED !! * With the “BULK RX = WRITE” status, the EW13020m receives the bulk data if you send it from the MIDI recorder, even in Sound or Edit mode. However, this operation OVERWRITES sounds in the ‘currentuser sound banks. Ifyou donot store them yet, save them tothe MIDI recorder and then attempt. 63 ——————— Appendix: Preset Sound List or Suut2 | 11 Flute 21 FBack! | 81 Gloom | 41 Depot 02 Judg94 12 Clarinet | 22 Smoky 32 Blow 42.
