Lesson idea implementation:

For this lesson, my First grade students will be working as a class as well as the teacher to produce a
timeline connected to the historical figures in America that we have been learning about throughout the
week. With this, standard students will have been learning about various different important people in
Americas history. When introducing this project I will begin by asking, who can raise their hand and tell me
who Benjamin Franklin is? Then I will continue as the discussion further by asking, why is he so important to
history? This will help to refresh some of the students memories. Then we will have a brief discussion and
make a list of some of the important things Benjamin Franklin has done. Once we have a list, the class will
work together to put the facts in chronological order based off previous knowledge. Once the students have
done this, I will pull up TimeLine online and explain what it is/what we are creating.
After the students are aware of what the website is and what we are doing I will let the students help me
put the timeline in order, add pictures, add descriptions, etc. After we have worked together to create the
Timeline we will go to the lab (use iPad, laptops, etc.). The students will have the opportunity to choose a
historical figure we have learned about it class, but if they desire I will let them have the freedom to explore
American history further and pick someone we havent talked about. Once they have chosen a famous
historical figure they will have the time to do the necessary research in order to create their own individual
timeline. Once the students complete their timeline they will post it onto Edmodo where I can view them and
grade them. Edmodo will also allow the students to see their classmates timelines as well, this way the
students will have a chance to learn about all the different historical figures. This lesson is a great way for
students to be in control of their learning, while also helping their peers to learn more as well.
