MEASUREMENT AND SCIENCE STUDY GUIDE The purpose of this unit is to explain the basic units of measurements in the metric system. Students will practice using the tools and equipment used to measure in the metric system as well as the S.I. units of measurement. There are two measurement systems used in the United States, The English or US. system, and The Metric System. The metric system is almost completely coherent, whereas the English system is not coherent at all! We will spend the entire year looking solely at the metric system of measurement that is based on the standard prefixes and powers of 10. It has base units for length, volume, mass, etc,, and is more consistent than other systems of measurement. ESSENTIAL QUESTION: Why do scientists use the metric system of measurement? LEARNING OBJECTIVES: -Understand the relationships between units within the metric system. -Represent quantities using different units. -Understand the basic measurement ideas that lead to accurate measurement. -Identify the correct SI units of measurement for mass, weight, length, volume, temperature , and density. -Use metric units to measure various data. VOCABULARY Metric system -volume -mass -weight Density -temperature -length -millimeter Centimeter -meter -kilometer -light year Meniscus -milliliter -newton -eravity Kilogram -gram --Celsius -Kelvin sI milli -centi -deci kilo -hanometer -absolute zero -angstrom -micrometer : 2.
