The Navigational Lock at the Hugh L. Keenleyside Dam will be closed on Saturday, October 14
and Sunday, October 15. The lock will reopen at 8 a.m. on Monday, October 16.

This closure is necessary to undertake maintenance activities that will ensure the long-term, reliable
and safe operation of the Navigational Lock. We are sorry for any inconvenience that this closure
may cause and thank you for your support while this work is completed.

Regular hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week, and this service
is available at no charge for all properly equipped watercraft.

nomic damage. Knotweed grows fast, and can quickly take

Taghum Hall Fall Harvest Festival
Ready for some good old fashioned fall fun for the
whole family? Come on Sunday, October 15 to the Taghum
Hall Fall Harvest Festival from 10 am to 3 pm. Admission
is $2, with free admission for children under 12.
There are plenty of activities and events throughout the
day. Browse through the many booths of homegrown and
handcrafted items, treat yourself to some fresh borscht
and bread, try a cake-walk, listen to some music and
enjoy various activities for children.
There will be a pie eating contest every hour, guaran-
teed to be both delicious and messy. Or, you can enter
your own homemade apple pies into the baking contest.
Just bring along two apple pies labeled on the bottom of
the pie pan. Judging will begin at 1 pm.
Bring some old clothes from home to dress up a scare-
crow and try to win a prize. Bring along an unusually
shaped vegetable to win the weird vegetable mystery
prize. Or, take an ordinary vegetable and make it weird.
Bonus points for creativity! The childrens area will have
fun events and activities throughout the day.
The Fall Harvest Festival is a 100% fundraiser for the
Taghum Hall. Come by and see the halls extensive reno-
vations and the current progress on the storage facility
upgrade. Theres something for everyone at this fall festi-
val. Hope to see you there!

A fall reading in Slocan
On Sunday, October 29 starting at 1 pm, the Slocan
Community Library will host two writers, Barbara Curry
Mulcahy of Slocan and Emily Nilsen of Nelson. The
librarys Sunday afternoon soirees are a popular and com-
fortable event and this is your chance to experience an
Authors Reading there this fall.
You may know Barbara Curry Mulcahy for her columns
in the Valley Voice, her book The Man with the Dancing
Monkey (1998), her poetry, drama, fiction, nonfiction, or
prize-winning radio play. On this occasion, she will intro-
duce a broadside recently published by The North Press
in Port Townsend Washington. It is an excerpt of a longer
poem called Dragoman, set in Israel where she lived from
the age of 11 to 15. She, her sister and her mother were
evacuated in 1967 before the Six Day War. This poem con-
siders life amid the skirmishes and battles after the Six Day
War. Barbara is currently working on a novel set at about
the same time and she will also read excerpts from its first
chapter. Her talk will focus on this period of her life.
This spring, Emily Nilsen launched her debut poetry col-
lection, OTOLITH, published by Goose Lane Editions. It
was featured as a 2017 CBC Spring Preview pick, giving
it the distinction of being one of the most exciting books
hitting the shelves in the first half of the year from Canada
and beyond. It is described as at once spare and lush. In her
writing Nilsen turns over each idea carefully, letting noth-
ing escape her attention and saying no more than must be
said. In 2015, she was selected from over 1700 entrants
from across the country for her poem Meanwhile which
was shortlisted for the CBC Poetry Prize.
Please consider an outing to the Slocan Community
Library, 710 Harold Street, on October 29. The friendly vol-
unteers will be there to greet you with cookies. There will be

RDCK residents conserve water!
Residents and business owners were successful in con-
serving water in all of the RDCK water systems this sum-
mer. Water conservation measures are normally in place
from June 1 to September 30 every year for RDCK water
systems, and are effective in reducing peak demand as a
result of outdoor irrigation during the hot and dry sum-
mer months. This year, stricter water conservation mea-
sures were in place in the Balfour, McDonald Creek,
Riondel, Woodland Heights, and Erickson Water Systems
due to significant demand increase in combination with
declining reservoir and/or supply water flows.

Category 2 fires were again permit-
ted within the Columbia Fire Zone
in the Southeast Fire Centre due
to a decreased risk of wildfire in
the region. A map of the affected

burning prohibition is still in effect
for the Boundary, Arrow, Kootenay
Lake, Invermere and Cranbrook

Gray Creek Pass reopens
The Gray Creek Pass has reopened after the back coun-
try forest fire closures, combined with a bridge replace-
ment project that occurred between September 2 and 29.
With this new improvement, all nine bridges are now solid
cement. Precast concrete sections for this bridge were sup-
plied by Rapid Span Precast Ltd of Armstrong BC.
The Pass is a seasonal route, usually open between July
1 and mid to late October, depending on early snowfalls
at the 6800 foot summit. Unlike most forest roads, it has
signs, cement curbing and a recreation site at Oliver Lake.
Although the lake is not visible from the road, it is well
worth taking ten minutes to walk through some 400 year
old larches to this tiny alpine gem.

Conserve water contd from pg 36
to the success of the water conservation efforts. Two sum-
mer ambassadors were able to attend community events,
deliver educational workshops, knock on over 500 doors
to provide water conservation information, respond to
overwatering concerns and complete 89 Water Smart
assessments in participating water systems. The main
objective of the 2017 Water Smart program was raising
local awareness of sustainable water use. Xeriscaping, the
practice of planting drought tolerant and native plant spe-
cies which can reduce water usage by 50%, was promoted
to RDCK water users.
In Erickson, water meters installed for 22 properties
with commercial orchards were regularly monitored and
usage was presented to the owner-operators with the aim
to optimize irrigation and reduce peak demand in the
Erickson Water System.
The RDCK appreciates the cooperation of water users
in adhering to the water conservation measures. As of
October 1, all Water Conservation Measures have been
rescinded in the RDCK Water Systems.
