Sound in Tv and Film

Sound
Sound has the power to create specific moods in a scene or for a character and
can signal events that are about to happen.
3 Types of Sound:
1. Human dialogue
2. Sound effects
3. Music
These 3 create a balance between the realism of the world of text
(verisimilitude) and the drama that is created by the use of sound.
2 types of Tv Drama Sound
1. Digetic sound: this is the dialogue in the text. An example is

1. Un- diegetic sound: this is sound that isnt apart of the dialogue from a character in
a text. It would be a voice over or a Narration. An example is the opening scene of

Rhythm
Rhythm is the beat,pole ,pace and tempo of the music in a scene. For example
the tempo usually increases when tension needs to be built in a scene. An

Fidelity
This is where the sound is faithful to the scene. For example when the
text shows a gun about to fire the sound of it should be presented as well.

Parallel
This is when the sound the audience hears on text matches the images
presented. An example of this is in the movie say anything.

Contrapuntal Sound
This is where the sound does not match the text. An example of this is

Synchronous
This is where the sound is in sync with the image. For example when the
lips of the character moves sound comes out. An example is the movie

Asynchorous is where the sound is in contrast with the text an example is 39

Volume
A change in volume makes a big difference to the mood. For example is can
create tension when it starts slow and gradually gets louder building up to
