Learning Goals

CO: multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers accurately.

LO: on whiteboards and with a partner discuss the steps involved in
multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers; then
accurately apply those steps to the equation.

What I know...

What I learned:
Key term:

Mixed number: a number that has a whole number and a fraction.

Ex 1-2/3 or 6-7/8 or 134-5/6

When multiplying fractions simply multiply straight across and reduce the
answer at the end.

Ex 1.

7 x 3 = 21 this equation is complete because it cannot be reduced.

8 x 4 = 32

Ex 2.

3 x 2= 6/3 = 2 this equation was not complete until the answer was

9 x 3= 27/3= 9 reduced.

Multiplying a fraction by a whole number.

7/12 x 4=

Turn the whole number into an improper fraction, then multiply, fix the
improper fraction, and then reduce.

7 x 4 = 28/4 = 7 2-1/3

12 x 1 = 12/4 = 3 3 7

Multiply mixed numbers

First step to multiplying mixed numbers is to turn all the mixed numbers
into improper fractions; then multiply straight across, fix the improper
fraction, and reduce.

Dividing fractions
Same process as multiplying, except you must reciprocate (flip) the
second number in the equation. This is done after you turn any mixed
numbers into improper fractions. Then simply multiply and reduce.
