Q.1 Identify the components indicated of the machines shown in Figure below.

following figure. The bar of bigger cross section has a circular hole of diameter 15 mm at section B. If a
force P of 400 N is applied to the composite member determine the normal stresses at sections A, B, C and
D.

Q.2 If the rivets shown in the following figure are subject to a force of 20 kN. Calculate the shear stresses
in both the cases if the diameter of the rivet is 5 mm. .

inner diameter of 40 mm, transmitting torque of 2000N-m. Find the maximum length possible for the shaft
if the torsion should be below 100.

Q2. How a brittle material can differentiate from a ductile material? Discuss with the help of stress-strain
diagram.

Q3. A solid circular shaft is required to transmit 200 kW (1 W = 1 N.m/s) while turning at 1.5 rev/s. The
allowable shearing stress is 42 MPa. Find the required shaft diameter.

Q.4 Weight of the crate is 1000 lbs. and the angle = 600. Calculate the stress in cord CD. Cross-sectional
area of the cord is 0.5 in2.
