The Conquest of Space

From this point of view, three verses of the
Qu r'an sh ou ld c o mman d o ur full att en tio n. O ne
exp resses, with out any t race o f ambiguit y, what
man sh ou ld and will ac hieve in th is field. In the
o t h e r t wo , Go d r e fe r s fo r t h e s ake o f t h e
unb elie ver s in M akka to th e su rpr ise the y wo uld
have if they were able to raise themselves up to
the Heavens; He alludes to a hypothesis which will
not be realized for the latter.
Th e r e c an b e n o d o u b t t h at t h is ve r se
indicates the possibility men will one day achieve
what we to day c all (pe rhaps rath er impr op er ly)
"th e co nqu est of spac e." One must no te t hat the
text of t he He ave ns, but also the Ear th, i.e . the

exploration of its depths.
1. The first of these verses is sura 55, verse 33:
"O assembly of jinns and men, if you can penetrate
r e gio n s o f t h e h e ave n s an d t h e e ar t h , t h e n
penetrate them! You will not penetrate them save
with a power."
2. The other two verses are taken from sura 15,
verses 14-15. God is speaking of the unbelievers in
M akka as t he co nte xt of t his p assage in the sura
sho ws: "Even if We op en ed unt o t he m a gat e to
He aven an d t he y we re t o c on t in ue asc en d ing
therein, they would say: our sight is confused as in
drunkenness. Nay, we are people bewitched."
Th e abo ve e xp r e sse s ast o nish me nt at a
remarkable spectacle, different from anything man
could imagine.

therefore, we have two passages in the text of the
Qur 'an: o ne o f th em r efe rs t o wh at will on e day
b e c o me a r e alit y t h an ks t o t h e p o we r s o f
int elligenc e and in ge nuity Go d will give t o man,
an d t h e o t h e r d e sc r i b e s an e ve n t t h at t h e
unbelievers in M akka will never witness, hence its
character of a condition never to be realized. The
event will however, be seen by others as intimated
in the first verse quoted above.
