AND IF

SI DACA
And if branches tap my pane Si daca ramuri bat in geam
And the poplars whisper nightly, Si se cutremur plopii,
It is to make me dream again E ca in minte sa te am
I hold you to me tightly. Si-ncet sa te apropii.

And if the stars shine on the pond Si daca stele bat in lac
And light its sombre shoal, Adincu-i luminindu-l,
It is to quench my minds despond E ca dureerea mea s-o-npac
And flood with peace my soul. Inseninindu-mi gindul.

And if the clouds their tresses part Si daca norii desi se duc
And does the moon out blaze, De iese-n luciu luna,
It is to remind my heart E ca aminte sa-mi aduc
I long for you always. De tine-ntotdeauna.

ODE (in antique metre)
ODA (n metru antic)
I little thought that I would learn to die; Nu credeam s-nvt a muri vrodat;
Forever young, enveloped in my cloak, Pururi tnr, nfsurat n manta-mi,
My dreaming eyes I lifted to the star Ochii mei nltam vistori la steaua
Of solitude. Singurttii.

When of a sudden you stood in my way, Cnd deodat tu rsrisi n cale-mi,

On, anguish you, of nameless suffering sweet... Suferint tu, dureros de dulce...
And to the dregs I dank the draught of death Pn-n fund bui voluptatea mortii
Unpardoning. Nendurtoare.

Miserably I burn alive like Nessus, Jalnic ard de viu chinuit ca Nessus,
Or Hercules wrapped in his poisoned cloak; Ori ca Hercul nveninat de haina-i;
The fire in me the boundless sea itself Focul meu a-l stinge nu pot cu toate
Could never quench. Apele mrii.

By my own dreams consumed, I endless wail; De-al meu propriu vis, misuit m vaiet,
At my own pile I am consumed in flame, Pe-al meu propriu rug, m topesc n flcri...
Shall I then luminous one day return Pot s mai renviu luminos din el ca
As does the Phoenix? Pasrea Phoenix?

Tormenting eyes but vanish from my way, Piar-mi ochii turburtori din cale,
Come to my breast again sad unconcern; Vino iar n sn, nepsare trist;
That I may die in peace at last, myself Ca s pot muri linistit, pe mine
Give back to me. Mie red-m!

HIGH O'ER THE MAIN
STELELE-N CER
High o'er the main Stelele-n cer
Many stars beaming, Deasupra marilor
Distantly gleaming Ard departarilor,
Thus till they wane. Pana ce pier.

Thunderous stroke Dupa un semn

Of green billows breaking, Clatind catargele,
Creaking and quacking Tremura largele
Great vessels of oak. Vase de lemn;

Like castles far blown Niste cetati

Adrift on the ocean, Plutind pe marile
Ever in motion, Si miscatoarele
Ever alone. Pustietati.

Herons migrating Stol de cocori

Pass o'er the sky, Apuca-ntinsele
Hurrying by, Si necuprinsele
And never waiting. Drumuri de nori

Fly till they fall, Zboara ce pot

Yet others starting, Si-a lor intrecere,
Eternally parting... Vecinica trecere -
Aye, that is all. Asta e tot...

Blossoms the rose, Floare de crang,

But life has swift flowers Astfel vietile
And youth like the hours Si tineretile
Scarce comes than it Trec si se stang.

Thus every delight, Orice noroc

No matter its reasons, Si-ntinde-aripele,
Is swept by the seasons Gonit de clipele
Soon out of our sight. Starii pe loc.

O angels above, Pana nu mor

While I am still here Pleaca-te, ingere,
To my singing give ear, La trista-mi plangere
To my sadness and love. Plina de-amor.

For shame is it not Nu e pacat

Thus to squander scarce seeing Ca sa se lepede
This moment of being Clipa cea repede
That is all we have got? Ce ni s-a dat?

TO THE STAR
LA STEAUA
So far it is athwart the blue La steaua care-a rasarit
To where yon star appears, E-o cale-atit de lunga,
That for its light to reach our view Ca mii de ani i-au trebuit
Has needed thousand years. Luminii sa ne-ajunga.

Maybe that ages gone it shed Poate de mult s-a stins in drum
Its glow, then languished in the skies, In departari albastre,
Yet only now its rays have sped Iar raza ei abia acum
Their journey to our eyes. Lucii vederii noastre.

The icon of the star that died Icoana stelei ce-a murit
Slowly the vault ascended; Incet pe cer se suie:
Time was ere it could first be spied, Era pe cind nu s-a zarit,
We see now what is ended. Azi o vedem, si nu e.

So is it when our loves aspire Tot astfel cind al nostru dor

Is hid beneath nights bowl, Pierii in noapte-adinca,
The gleam of its extinguished fire Lumina stinsului amor
Enkindles yet our soul. Ne urmareste inca.

Sonnet 60

By William Shakespeare

Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore,

So do our minutes hasten to their end;
Each changing place with that which goes before,
In sequent toil all forwards do contend.
Nativity, once in the main of light,
Crawls to maturity, wherewith being crownd,
Crooked elipses gainst his glory fight,
And Time that gave doth now his gift confound.
Time doth transfix the flourish set on youth
And delves the parallels in beautys brow,
Feeds on the rarities of natures truth,
And nothing stands but for his scythe to mow:
And yet to times in hope my verse shall stand,
Praising thy worth, despite his cruel hand.
I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud

By William Wordsworth
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine

And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they

Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazedand gazedbut little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie

In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
As You Go Through Life

by Ella Wheeler Wilcox

Dont look for the flaws as you go through life;

And even when you find them,
It is wise and kind to be somewhat blind
And look for the virtue behind them.
For the cloudiest night has a hint of light
Somewhere in its shadows hiding;
It is better by far to hunt for a star,
Than the spots on the sun abiding.

The current of life runs ever away

To the bosom of Gods great ocean.
Dont set your force gainst the rivers course
And think to alter its motion.
Dont waste a curse on the universe
Remember it lived before you.
Dont butt at the storm with your puny form,
But bend and let it go oer you.

The world will never adjust itself

To suit your whims to the letter.
Some things must go wrong your whole life long,
And the sooner you know it the better.
It is folly to fight with the Infinite,
And go under at last in the wrestle;
The wiser man shapes into Gods plan
As water shapes into a vessel.
