This document discusses guidelines for constructing true-false or binary choice test items. It outlines 9 suggestions: 1) avoid broad statements, 2) avoid specific determiners, 3) avoid trivial statements, 4) avoid double negatives, 5) avoid long complex sentences, 6) avoid including two ideas in one statement, 7) attribute opinions to a source, 8) make true and false statements equal in length, and 9) have an equal number of true and false statements. The guidelines are from Linn and Miller (2005) and aim to create unambiguous true-false test items.

Suggestions for Constructing True- False (Binary Items) Linn & Miller , 2005
1. Avoid broad general statements if they are to be
judged true or false. Example: The president of the United States is elected to that office.
2. Avoid specific determiners as clues.
Example: Solar energy is often used as an alternative energy source. Suggestions for Constructing True- False (Binary Items) Linn & Miller , 2005
3. Avoid trivial statements.
Example: The president of the United States is elected to that office.
4. Avoid the use of negative statements, especially
double negatives. Example: None of the steps in the experiment was unnecessary. Suggestions for Constructing True- False (Binary Items) Linn & Miller , 2005
5. Avoid long, complex sentences.
Example: Subject pronouns, which can be found only in the beginning of sentences and have no bearing on the word order, are used to replace nouns.
6. Avoid including two ideas in one statement, unless
cause and effect are being measured Example: Verbs are used to state descriptions, while adjectives are for actions. Suggestions for Constructing True- False (Binary Items) Linn & Miller , 2005
7. If opinion is used, attribute it to some source, unless the
ability to identify opinion is being specially measured. Example: Scientific method is the only way of studying science.
8. True statements and False statements should be
approximately equal in length.
9. The number of true and false statements should be
