zika cases that has been confirmed in our neighboring country.
There is a case report that said Zika virus have been confirmed at our neighboring country
which is Hougang Singapore.
b. Explain about zika
Definition
Zika is an infectious disease that have been reported in many countries (67 precisely)
since 2015 and have been found in our neighboring country such as Singapore, Thailand,
Malaysia, and Vietnam.
Transmission
Zika virus is primarily transmitted to people through the bite of an infected mosquito
(the same type of mosquito like in dengue). Besides that, according to WHO, theres a
possibility of this disease transmission through a sexual activities and blood transfusion.
Effect of zika infection in human
According to WHO, this disease not only could cause a congenital brain abnormalities
(microcephaly) during pregnancy but could also trigger a Guillain-Barre syndrome (a
disease that could cause paralyze) and other neurological disorder.

with microcephaly.
c. Should the major worried about this issue?
Eventhough theres no data about confirmed case in our district, we cant be really sure that
our district is zika free area. The proximity between us and Singapore is very small (just 20
km) it cannot close the possibility of the mobilization of this case into batam.
d. Port policy
There is no need to close the port immediately but we have to take an immediate action in
preventing Zika entering Batam from another region. Port health office could do a screening
for people that arriving in Batam. We could established a temporary medical desk at the
port to screen passenger. Many people infected with zika wont have symptoms or only have
mild symptoms. However zika can pass through to another person by having sex with their
partner evn though they have no symptoms at all.
e. Surveillance
We can not know for sure that our district is zika free area if we do not have a surveillance.
We need to do a surveillance for a better understanding of what the situation of our district
related to this disease so we could make an appropriate decisions regarding this situation.
