Vocabulary Lesson

When trying to introduce vocabulary that was unknown, it can be a very difficult

challenge. When trying to get the students to understand the complicated words, I would

use context clues, using the difficult word in a sentence to see if they could figure out the

definition. After me, the teacher using the high frequency words in a sentence then also

showing the students a visual of the word, I would give the students a worksheet with

three different boxes on the paper. The first box would say what I believe the word

means and the students would write down what they believe the definition of what they

think the word means. They would then pair share what they believe through the context

clues and visual what they through the vocabulary word means. After a few minutes the

class would share what they think the dentition means, than look up what the real

definition means. And in the next box on the worksheet it would state, what the

definition is and the students would write down the real definition. On the last box on

the worksheet the students would draw a picture of the actual definition. I think it is

important when teaching to be visual (writing/drawing) and also discussing the definition

so all learning styles are approached so all students can be successful within the

classroom.
