Pipe Calculations (Rev Date: 5/6/2011)

References: 49 CFR 192 (192.5, 192.111, 192.105, 192.107, 192.109, PG&E Gas Standard)

1. Calculate the maximum allowable operating pressure (MAOP) for a steel pipeline in a class
three location with the following specifications (24 O.D., 0.375 W.T., X-52, DSAW).
a. DSAW stands for Double Submerge Arc Welded
b. X-52 pipe has a specified minimum yield strength of (SMYS) of 52,000 psig

812.5 psig

2. Determine the percent SMYS for a steel pipeline with an MAOP of 720 psig. The pipeline
has the following specifications (16 O.D., .312 W.T., X-52, ERW).

35.50 %

3. Will the pipeline in Problem 2 be able to operate at an MAOP of 720 psig in a class 2
location per 49 CFR 192.111?

Yes, 0.60 design factor

4. Determine the wall thickness and grade requirements for a 10-inch nominal diameter
pipeline operating at 1440 psi with a design factor of 0.60. (Use PG&E standard pipe sizes
as listed in PG&E GAS Standard A-15)
0.365, grade b
