The document that I will be analyzing is Hernan Cortes: Letters from Mexico.

This document is a
letter written by Hernan Cortes with his encounter with King Moctezuma from a descriptive view.
The main purpose of this document was to tell the facts of what happen when Cortes
encountered Moctezuma. Cortes details about the first encounter when he entered the city and
his meeting of their people he comments on how they dress focusing on there barefoot and
different costume which to him may seem strange. By the way Cortes retails how Moctezuma
and his people performed a ceremony of kissing the earth draws an image of Montezuma and
his people going down to perform the ceremony while Cortes stands there looking down at them
gives a sense of his people surrendering to cortes. Due to the timing of Cortes arrival
Moctezuma mistakens Cortes and his spaniards as part of their prophecies, sees them as gods
and so subordinates himself to him. Moctezuma explains the appearance of Cortes as part of
their prophecies saying that the places where Cortes says he comes from is there peoples
natural lord. At this point Moctezuma submits to Cortes even to the point where he tell Cortes
That for you are in your own land and your own house. This is significant due to the fact during
that time they see land as a common resources where people could be assigned to use but not
own and that it belongs to everyone. Cortes story reflects the concept of others by showing the
difference between his people and the aztecs. For example when Cortes details the necklace of
the one given to Moctezuma and the one received by him noting the difference of pearls and
glass compared to snails shells and gold. We learn that the other is never equal, that one has to
be superior or inferior compared to the other and we can see that Cortez becomes the superior
one when Moctezuma ensures Cortes that his people will obey you and hold you as our
lord.
