Interview with Younique Author and
Speaker Jayson Lo

Genuine. Generous. Godly. These are the three words that would best describe Jayson Lo, at least in my point of view.
I first met Jayson Lo when we were both interviewed for an online financial literacy talk show. He shared how he used
to be buried in debt, how he recovered from it, and how he became an author and a speaker.
After the interview, Jayson,hiswife Kat, and I struck up a conversation. Then they offered to give me a ride home.
My place was out of the way and I was perfectly okay to ride a cab going home but they insisted to drive me home, noting
that it was already a bit late and it was raining. Jayson even gave me signed copies of his booksDebterminedandYounique.
While inside his car, Jayson asked me what I do. I shared that I was into writing books and giving talks. He told me
hell probably refer me when the need arises. He was genuinely listening.
Months later, I received an SMS from Jayson asking me if I would be interested to give a talk on Integrity to the
officers of the Bureau of Immigration. He was true to his word and he was generous to share speaking opportunities.
How did he overcome his multi-million debts? How did he become a bestselling author and speaker? Lets get to
know Jayson.
SHA: In your book Debtermined, you mentioned that you

were once in deep debt. Can you share more about it and how
you managed to rise above it?
JAYSON: To be honest, it was very difficult. My wife and I
had eight credit cards all with debt. Although it took years for
us to pay them, it was the desire to get out of debt that made
the difference. If you havent reached the point where you are
MAD at debt, you wont get out of debt. Being emotionally
involved is critical for without it, you will always be defeated.

SHA: Can you share with us your journey as an author

and a speaker? How did you start?
JAYSON: As an author, my first book is entitledYOUnique:
Understanding Others by Understanding YOU.It was actually
11 years in the making. I learned about the four personality
types many years ago and was so fascinated with it. I studied it
fervently. Read almost 20 books on the subject, attended numerous seminars conducted by international organizations,
and mastered the topic. During that time, I was freely teaching it to others.
I was hoping and waiting for a Filipino author to write about it. I got tired of waiting, so after 11 years, I wrote the
book. The comment that I usually get in my talks in the corporate/marketpalce is that This should have been taught in
school. Today I am doing that also for some universities who have included the YOUnique program in their curriculum.
As a speaker, Ive been speaking for 16 years. But the first time a company paid me for a speaking engagement was
after 10 years of speaking. I wont forget that momentous day. As a businessman, speaking wasnt my bread-and-butter;
my business was. It was until recently when there was a high demand for my speaking services that I made the transition

to be a fulltime speaker/corporate trainer three years ago. So for aspiring speakers out there, just work hard, continuously
learn, be humble, and find mentors.
SHA: Wow! You were giving talks pro bono for 10 years! So generous of you! How do you differentiate yourself from
the other speakers?
JAYSON:I am a speaker who wants to show the world rather the universe, that I am confidently good-looking with
a heart. LOL! Seriously, I think its my versatility. I can speak in a room with top level executives, and the next day, speak
to bus drivers. Although I position myself as a speaker for top to mid-level people, I can go down to the masses. I also love
the youth so I speak in many schools.
Another differentiator would be how I strike the balance between information, inspiration, and entertainment. All
of my talks are not only theoretical, they are also empirical. I never speak about something that I havent done in the past.
My primary aim is for positive life-change and RESULTS.
The thing that kept me grounded is to appreciate other speakers and not compare myself to them. There are many
great speakers out there, and up until today, I would occasionally attend seminars and learn from others.
SHA: How do you market your books and talks?

JAYSON: There are many ways, but the best one is still word
of mouth. Give 110 percent to a client, exceed their expectations,
and take care of them. If you take care of them, they will take
care of your business. And the old saying that Its not what you
know, its who you know is true. But its really all about Who
Knows What You Know that will bring you business. Because
even if you are the best speaker in the world, yet no one knows
about you, youll be the best kept secret. Its not a pretty place
to be in.
Marketing is not about getting sales, as I mention in my
sales seminars. Marketing is all about awareness. Are the people
youre meant to serve aware that you exist?
SHA: You are a dedicated husband and dad. How do you

juggle your roles as a family man and as an infopreneur?
JAYSON: I love that, Infopreneur. Well, its about priorities.
Whenever people tell you that they dont have time, that they
are busy, its simply not true. No time is another word for not a
priority. You will always have time for the things you love and are
important to you.
Life priorities is a hierarchy of:
God
Family
Business/Work/Studies
Ministry/Volunteer Work
Self
SHA: You are an in-demand speaker who goes all around the Philippines and abroad. What tips can you share to
those who also want to be like you?
JAYSON: Know WHY you want to be a speaker (dont do things for the wrong reasons), determine what message it is
that you want to share to the world, increase your ability, learn from the best, be patient, be humble and work very hard.
If you do these things, your time will come. Just remember, if God can do it for others, He can also do it for you.
SHA: What makes you happy?

JAYSON: My motto in life is this: Love God, love others, and give it my best every single time. I do that every day
thats why Im happy. Here is my life verse in the Bible - Colossians3:23.

Ultimately, happiness is superficial. We should strive for joy instead. Happiness is afeeling while joy is a state of having
peace, no matter what. Even if you succeed or fail, you are victorious or defeated, joy will stay in you. And remember that
joy can only be attained as a byproduct of a godly life. Only through Jesus can we find joy or lasting happiness in our life.

business stands for.

Why Some Doors Are Closed

I LOVE open doors.

And like you, I thank God for open doors.
New breaks. New opportunities. New developments. New jobs. New businesses. New relationships.
But I believe we dont thank God enough for closed doors.
Because they too are great blessings.
There are many reasons doors are closed.
First reason: To protect you from what isnt your best blessing. To protect you from your second best and your third
best and your fourth best Because God always wants you to have the best version of your miracle.
I teach people to pray with specificity. With details. Because that stirs up our imagination and moves us to action.
But at the end of the day, we need to surrender the specifics and details to God and ask Him to give us the best version of
the miracle were praying for.
Second reason: Because were not yet ready for an open door. Yes, its what God wants for us, but its not yet the
right time.
One summer, when I was a thin, small, peep squeaky,
16-year-old boy, I placed a backpack over my shoulder and rode
a plane for Israel and Europe. (I won first prize in a Bible Quiz in
Televisionand this was the prize.)
It was the first time I traveled out of the Philippines.
After moving around Holy Land for 10 days, I took another
plane for Rome. And from one train to another, I traveled to 20
more cities in Europe: Assisi, Padua, Paris, Geneva, Brussels,
Amsterdam, Frankfurt
And heres the thing: For 41 days, I travelled all alone.
When I came back, on the first day of class, my teacher asked
everyone to share what we did last summer.
One classmate said, I went to the movies.
Another said, I played basketball.
Another said, I went to the beach.
I stood up in front of the class and said, I walked where Jesus walked in Jerusalem, visited the Pope in the Vatican
in Rome, climbed the Eiffel tower in Paris, walked the streets of Zurich, Switzerland, travelled to Innsbruck in Austria,
went to Frankfurt, Germany, prayed in Assisi, Italy
My classmates jaws fell to the floor.
And then I added the clincher, And I travelled all alone.
Now that freaked them out.
They almost pulled their hair and screamed, Thats unfair! Your parents allow you to go gallivanting all over the
world alone? My parents dont even allow me to cross the street alone!
I smiled. But I now understand why my door was open and their door was closed. Because I was ready and they were
not.
You see, my parents trusted me.
How? Because when I was 12 years old, I gave my life to God. When I was 13, I was already preaching. When I was
14, I was already doing ministry work in the slums, going door to door, sharing Jesus to them. When I was 14, I was already
leading Light of Jesus Family. So by the age of 16, I was ready.
And my parents knew that. They trusted me because I earned their trust. And so my door was open.
Is there a closed door in your life? It may also be possible that its not yet time because youre not yet readyand
that a closed door is saving you from total disaster.
But when you become ready, that door will open.

And heres a third reason for a closed door: Because you refuse to unlock it.
Ive noticed that in life, there are two kinds of closed doors.
First, when the door is locked on the outside. Thats when you need someone else to unlock it. Thats when you
need to wait for a miracle.
But theres a second closed door: When the door is locked on
the inside. That means at anytime, you can actually choose to open
the door and start walking out of that difficult situation.
But many people dont.
Sometimes because weve become so accustomed to our
prison. Were comfortable with our pain, we dont know any other
world.
But other times, its pride.
Sometimes, weve made mistakesand because of those
mistakes, were caught in a difficult situation where we think the
door is closed.
But in truth, the door is locked on the inside.
But because of pride, we hide inside our cell instead of walking
out. I believe that humility is the key that unlocks many doors. That
if you say, I made a mistake. Help me to God, to your family, to
your friends the door opens in front of you and you can walk out.
Dont misunderstand me. When the door unlocks, it doesnt
mean youre free the next day. Because the doorway may be a long tunnel and youll have to do a lot of walking out. But
at least, you can now unlock the door and start walking towards your freedom.
I believe humility can set you free.

Start thanking God. Reflect on the reason it is closed.
And believe that your open door is coming your way.
