Unit 2 Paper: Power

This Unit was monumental for me and my development as a potential educator because I

was able to see how there is Power in art if used thoughtfully and creatively. This unit analyzes the

many different ways that children can express power in their art work. Specifically in Hurwitz and

Day, we are brought to the conclusion that visual culture is relevant to art education. Children are

being exposed to advertisements hundreds of times throughout the day and if we can use this

teaching tool to empower our students to think and create we will be responsible for molding

amazing young people to better our society.

Education in and through the visual art is needed to support, and sometimes challenge, the

increasingly sophisticated visual culture that has developed in postindustrialized environments. Kerry

Freedman, Teaching Visual Culture (New York Teachers College Press, 2003) When teaching my future

students I need to create examples in their daily lives in order to relate to their generation. I do think

history and the classics serve a purpose in teaching but also the present can help students compare the past

to the present to make sure there is meaning in their art making. This will help them with the tools to

express themselves and their beliefs to their generation. It is so important for everyone to feel like they

can have an outlet to express how they feel especially through artwork. MichaelDay, Teaching Cultural

Understanding within comprehensive Art Education The International Journal of Arts Education 3, no. 1

(July 2005) 37-53.
