The course offers an overview of some major issues in Philosophy of Science, and
especially in Philosophy of Natural Sciences. It deals with the following topics:
- Aristotelian Science and its reception in the Middle Ages. Aristotelian and
medieval cosmology. Motion, void and the uniqueness of the world. Faith and
Reason: the double-truth theory.
- The contestation of medieval science in the Renaissance. Neo-Platonism and
Humanism.
- The philosophical foundations of early modern cosmology: Copernic and
Galileo.
- Rationalism and Empiricism. Method and the foundation of the laws of nature
in the philosophy of Descartes and Locke.
- Newtonian induction and the notion of the System of the world from Newton
to Laplace. The controversy between Leibniz and Clarke.
- The contestation of classical science in the philosophy of Hume. Humes
critique of causality and the induction problem.
- The Kantian synthesis: space, time and causality.
- The conception of science in Comtes Positivism.
