The Government of Bengal:

Caloutta, the th February, O31.
Whereas it appears to the Governor in-CounciPthat the plit
entitled “Karagur” by Manmath Ray, M.A. printed’ by bin
at the Sree-Gouranga Press at No. 71/1, Mirzayyr Street,
Calcutta, and published at Barada-Bhaban, Swed Hat,
(Dinajpur ), which has been performed at Monomohan Theatre,
Caleutta, is likely to oxcite feclings of disaffection towards
the Government established by law in British India.(ie)
Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred by section
Sof the Dramatic Performances Act, 1876, ( XI of ), the
Yovernor-in-Council hereby prohibits the performance of the
play in any public place.

While admitting that the Bengali drama “Karagar™ or
Prison, which was staged for some days at the Monomohen
‘Theatre, was a mythological ene, the Ho». Mr. W. D.
Prentice told Dr. N.C. Sen Gupta that the Government had
ohibited the further performance of the play on the advice of
their legal adyigers, as it was likely to excite fedlings of
disaffection toylards the Government.
‘The Home Member added that ostensibly the play did not
to present-day polities, but actually its bearing on present
politics was beyond doubt,
