Collaborative Beowulf

Use selection of Beowulf by Duncan Spaeth

Split up the reading so every person in the group can read aloud. By doing this, you will be able to
notice alliteration, rhythm and kennings.

As a group, discuss and answer the following:

1. How does imagery in the the opening lines offer a vivid contrast between Grendels world and
Hrothgars battle hall??

2. With what aspects of nature is Grendel associated?

3. Explain the allusion: Cast out from men, an exile accurst, The killing of Abel, brother of Cain, Was
justly avenged by the Judge Eternal.

4. Using your worksheets from Anglo Saxon search, find examples of pagan and Christion traditions.

5. As a group, identify 10 kennings.
