MKT 201 Engineering Mathematics

Fall 2017-2018
Assignment #1
Due: October 09, 2017 Monday.

!!CAUTION!!: Cheating and copying somebody elses work during the homework will not be
tolerated. If I find that anyone has done this, you will get a ZERO for that assignment. Thank you in
advance for your honesty.

PROBLEMS

1) For the curve x 1 9 y 3 9 , find a parametric representation. Calculate length of the

2 2

curve by using this parametric representation.

2) Find the directional derivative of the function f x, y, z ye3 xz in the direction of the vector
2

r 2, 2 3,3 at point P R 1, R, R 1 . ( Take R as the last digit of your student ID number).

Is the function value increasing or decreasing in the direction of the vector r at the point P. Lets
assume that this function represent a temperature field in 0C and x,y,z in meters, what is the rate of
the temperature change ( in 0 C / m ) along r at the point P.

3) Plot the parametric curve , taking R as the last digit of your student
ID number (if it is equal to zero, take R = 10) with parameter in MATHEMATICA.
Using Mathematica, plot the velocity and acceleration vectors at point on the same graph.
(Hint: Use ParametricPlot and Arrow commands)

4) Plot the vector fields that are defined by the following vector functions in MATHEMATICA. Find
the divergence and curl of these vector functions by hands (do not use mathematica). (Hint: Use
VectorPlot3D command to plot vector fields. To write mathematical constant e in Mathematica,
press ESC e e ESC keys in sequence or use Exp[y] function.)
