Groups of 4 players with a ball each in a 5 yard square with a working player in the middle. ACTION. The Players with the ball at their feet serve the middle player with a variety of serves to focus on different ground skills. Each team tries to get to 20 repetitions of the skill before the other groups. Only balls played back and caught by the server count as a point With each new skill the middle player changes with an outside server. The Coach keeps the group scores. SKILLS. 1. Push pass. 2. Inside of foot to inside of other return. 3. outside of foot and pass inside of same foot. 4. Inside of foot & pass with outside of same foot. 5. Stop with sole of one foot and while stepping on ball hop on other foot and touch back with inside of hopping foot..6. Mathews Move. Drag w inside of receiving foot while hopping on other and push w outside of receiving foot all in one movement before passing back. COACH'S TIP. Make this a timed competition. PLAYER TIP. The Players jog on the spot behind their ball On the Coach's whistle all players FEINT and push their ball across the grid to their R or L as the coaches requests and tum to face center . Player 1 passes to player 2 and follows the pass, player two first touches the ball around the incoming player 1,Player 2 now passes to player 3 and the sequence is repeated VARIATION: Go the opposite way. Two teams lined up on either side of the coach on a sideline. ACTION: On the Coach's signal the first two players sprint around their goal and to the ball in front of the opponents goal and shoot. The first player to score wins. The shooters reset the ball and the next players go on the coach's signal. VARIATION. Each Player with a ball. The first player on each team dribbles from the side- line around their own goal and shoots on the opponents goal then sprint to release their next team mate. Every ball must be in the goal for team to win COACH'S TIP. Adjust the distance the ball is from the goal to the ability of your players. To Improve accuracy of first time shooting/passing SET UP server in between two small Coerver goals, with balls. To Improve “Fighting Spirit” SET UP. A 20/24 x 20/24yd grid with a small goal at each end and 5 yd shooting zones marked by cones in front of each goal The Coach at the mid point on one side of field with a supply of balls with both teams on either side of him and two cones on the opposite side of the field opposite each team. ACTION. The coach blows whistle and a player from each team sprints across the field and around their cone and come back towards Coach to get possession and try to score on either goal from inside the shooting zone. Scorers stay on but must sprint around his team cone to continue while new player from opposing team comes in immediately and rounds his cone too. COACH TIP. Assess player advantages and play balls that give trailing players the chance to defend strongly. PLAYER TIP. To improve individual pressing. ‘SET UP. A 20x20yd grid. 2 teams of 6 or 7 players. One team on the grid as “Attackers”. The second team lined up on a sideline as “Defenders.” ACTION. On the Coach's signal one “Defender” sprints onto the field to tag an “Attacker” then sprints off to release his next team mate. ‘The tagged Attacker stays on the field and continues in the game. If an ‘Attacker ’steps off the field that is considered a tag, Each Defender takes his turn and the Coach times how long it takes the defending team players to tag an opponent and get back in their starting position. Change team roles and see which team takes least time to complete the job. Each Defender must carry a ball in his arms as he chases the attackers. COACH'S TIP. Adjust the size of the field to fit your players ages and abilities. PLAYER TIP. Foous on one opponent and try to comer them. A 20x20yd grid. 2 teams of 6, 7 or 8 players. One team on the grid as “Attackers”, The second team lined up on a sideline as “Defenders.” ACTION. two Defenders carrying a ball between them. They can run with the ball and throw it to their partner near an Attacker to tag them. Coach times how long before all attackers tagged. COACH'S TIP. Make each pair go twice. Their game should improve with practice. To Improve Individual Pressing SET UP. A 20 x 18yd area. Two teams facing each other across the grid, the defending team with a ball each. ‘Two small Goals on each side line facing the Defending Team. ACTION. The First player on the Defending team passes to the first player on the opposite team and sprints to pressure opponent and prevent him/her penetrating the half line to score on the goals facing the defending team COACH TIP. Encourage Defenders to get across the half line quickly as the press cannot star until that happens. PLAYER TIP. Try to be touch close when pressing and keep opponent from crossing the mid line. Defenders can change on the fly when they get tired. The coach counts the time it takes for the Defenders to get 10 touches on the 10 balls coach plays in. They don't have to control the ball. Just touch it while attackers use the whole area to keep possession, teams change roles. COACH TIP. Encourage 1st Defenders to press the ball and team mates to work in close ‘support and NOT in the other half of the area. PLAYER TIP. Press together with your team mates as a group and and not as lone Defenders. SET UP. A 20/25 yd grid according to players ages and abilities. 3 teams of 4 or 5 players. ACTION. Two teams compete in the box while the third team are walll passers on the outside lines. playing with the team in possession. The teams in the middle compete for 3 minutes to see which team can get the most interior passes inside the box. ‘Teams can use the Wall Passers to keep possession but the passes to and from the wall passers don't count towards the team total. Only interior passes count. Teams change roles and count team totals at the end. COACH TIP. Give teams at least a couple of rounds of this kind of competition as they often improve dramatically once they get the feel of the game. PLAYER TIP. To improve all 1v1 attacking and defending SET UP. Two small goals 25/30 yards apart with 4 yd cone gates 2 yards in front of each goal. Two teams facing each other across the field, one team, with a ball each: ACTION. Y1 passes to R 1 who moves to attack a goal and Y1 defends. R1 can only score by dribbling through one of the gates to shoot. If the defender wins the ball he can score. Goals can only be scored by dribbling through the gate in front of either goal If a player dribbles through a gate at one end then changes direction for the other they must still go through the other gate before shooting. COACH'S TIP. Encourage a positive touch towards a goal with the first touch of the attacker. Development 1. Coach demands a specific move from the attacker before he can go on to mount the rest of his attack. Variation 2. The Attacker must tell coach the initial move he is going to use before the opponent passes the ball. PLAYER TIP. Attackers, try all your moves. Try to shoot with your foot farthest from the defender. Defenders. Be patient. A16 x8 yard mini field with a small goal at each end, Two teams of players are positioned around the field and on either side of the goals. Red 1 & Yellow 1 on the pitch (1 v 1) ACTION. On the coact's signal two players start with a foot each on the ball in the centre spot. On the coach's call, they play full pressure 1 v 1 looking to score in each other’s goal. When the ball goes to the perimeter, the perimeter players play it back in 1 touch and the game continues. Players can only shoot to score over the half way line. When a player scores they must spr back to their own goal and touch it before defending. When scored against, players must retrieve a ball from their own goal and attack the opponent's goal as quickly as possible Each game lasts for 1 minute or as the coach designates. COACH TIP. Match the players fairly, adjust the time according to your player's abilities. This drill is physically demanding so the time of each game is crucial. PLAYER TIP. Try lots of feint actions and experiment with all your moves. Two teams of 6/7 players ACTION Teams play keep away to a total of 25 passes for any team Passes do not have to be consecutive but must be intentional, not rebounds or deflections, and must be received under control by a team mate to count. Teams forcing the ball out of play get possession at the restart Coach counts passes out loud so everyone knows the score VARIATION 1: Teams play two touch soccer to 25 passes. VARIATION 2: Teams play to 15 wall passes. COACH'S TIP. Make the field larger or smaller according to the numbers and ability of your players. PLAYER TIP. Make passing, moving and calling a habit.
