Abstract:
The idea of programmable networks has recently re-gained considerable
momentum due to the emergence of the Software-Defined Networking
(SDN) paradigm. SDN, often referred to as a "radical new idea in
networking", promises to dramatically simplify network management
and enable innovation through network programmability[1]. SDN is
characterized by its two distinguished features, including decoupling the
control plane from the data plane and providing programmability for
network application development. As a result, SDN is positioned to
provide more efficient configuration, better performance, and higher
flexibility to accommodate innovative network designs[2]. This paper
surveys latest developments in this active research area of SDN. We
present the SDN architecture and the OpenFlow standard in particular,
discuss current alternatives for implementation and testing of SDN-
based protocols and services
