Chapter 1

The novel opens with aunt Polly finding Tom stealing jam
At the time of Tom's punishment he tricks her and escapes
When he returns for supper he is asked questions about his whereabouts by Aunt
Polly
Aunt Polly asks Tom leading questions in an attempt to confirm her suspicion that he
skipped school that afternoon and went swimming instead.
Tom explains his wet hair by saying that he pumped water on his head and shows her
that his collar is still sewn from the morning, which means that he couldnt have taken
his shirt off to swim.
He still ends up getting in trouble as his younger brother Sid points out that the colour
of the thread was changed
The chapter ends after Tom's encounter with the new boy in the town
Tom and the new arrival exchange insults for a while and then begin wrestling.

Analysis

THE FIRST INCIDENT SHOWS TOM CAN THINK ON HIS FEET, EVEN AT THE
TIME OF TROUBLE AND PUNISHMENT HE IS ABLE TO FIND A WAY TO MAKE
THE SITUATION IN HIS FAVOUR.

THE SECOND INCCIDENT SHOWS THAT TOM WAS GOOD AT PLANNING, i.e.
FORESIGHTEDNESS- AS HE WAS ABLE TO ANTICIPATE THE QUESTIONS THAT
HE WOULD BE ASKED. AND FOR WHICH HE ALREADY HAD PREPARED
ANSWERS FOR. THESE ARE ONE OF THE ESSENTIAL QUALITIES THAT A TOP
LEVEL MANAGEMENT SHOULD HAVE.

THE THIRD INCCIDENT SHOWS A NEGATIVE CHARACTERISTIC i.e.- ANGER. A

GOOD MANAGER SHOULD BE CALM AND COMPOSED, NOT FULL OF ANGER
THAT WILL MAKE HIM LASH OUT AT ANYBODY.

CHAPTER 2

On Saturday morning, Aunt Polly sends Tom out to whitewash the fence.
Jim passes by and Tom tries to lure in him to do his own work by offering him a
marble, but they are interrupted by Aunt Polly.
After a while as another boy goes by Tom tricks the boy in believing what a pleasure
whitewashing is, which makes the boy offer Tom his apple to have the privilege of
working on the fence
Over the course of the day, every boy who passes ends up staying to whitewash, and
each one gives Tom something in exchange.
By the time the fence has three coats, Tom has collected a hoard of miscellaneous
treasures.
ANALYSIS

THIS CHAPTER REFLECTS AN IMPORTANT CHARACTERISTIC ABOUT

HUMANS AS TOM SAID," all it takes to make someone want something is to make
that thing hard to get." THIS SHOWS THAT TOM INHERITS AN IMPORTANT
CHARACTER i.e., UNDERSTANDING HUMAN PSYCOLOGY.

THIS TRAIT IS IMPORTANT IN ANY LEVEL OF MANAGER, TO

UNDERSTAND THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU. TOM ALSO KNEW HOW TO
GET HIS WORK DONE THE SMATER WAY.

CHAPTER 3 is related with the development of the plot.

Meeting a girl named Becky and the various things he does to impress her
(relevant in the upcoming chapters)

CHAPTER 4

It starts by a scene where Tom struggles to memorise verses of the bible for
Sunday school(church), but when he is offered an incentive(knife),he is able to
learnt them in a second.
Before class begins, Tom trades all the spoils he has gained from his
whitewashing scam for tickets.(The tickets are given as rewards for well-
recited Bible verses)
2000 verses = A bible given as an honour
Judge Thatcher was invited to the church as well as his wife and daughter,
Becky.
In order to impress her Tom trades his tickets for the bible. But is faced with a
problem, when guest asks him to show off his knowledge.
The narrator pleads, Let us draw the curtain of charity over the rest of the
scene.

GIRL IN TOWN. HE TRADES ALL HIS TREASURES TO GET THE TICKETS
FOR WHICH HE CAN GET THE BIBLE AND WILL BE ABLE TO IMPRESS
BECKY IN FRONT OF THE WHOLE CHURCH.

HE IS ABLE TO DO THAT, EVEN AFTER HE MADE A FOOL OF HIMSELF BY

CHAPTER 5

was a trouble maker, but also smart enough not to get caught.

CHAPTER 6

On his way to school, Tom encounters Huckleberry Finn, the son of the town
drunkard.
Huck carries with him a dead cat, which he plans to take to the graveyard that
night, to see if a superstition is true or not.
Tom agrees to go with Huck to the cemetery that night.
Tom arrives late, and the schoolmaster demands an explanation. Tom notices
an open seat on the girls side of the room, next to Becky Thatcher
He decides to get in trouble on purpose, knowing that he will be sent to sit
with the girls as punishment.
He boldly declares, I stopped to talk with Huckleberry Finn! The horrified
teacher whips Tom and sends him to the seat next to Becky.

ANALYSIS

THE MEETING WITH HUCK SHOWS A THST TOM IS BRAVE TO GO ON QUESTS

EVEN IF IT AS SCARY AS GOING TO A CEMETRY AT NIGHT.

HE IS FOCUSED AS HE STILL DOESN'T FORGET ABOUT HIS GOAL i.e., TO

IMPRESS BECKY. HE FINDS DIFERENT WAYS TO GET TO THE GOAL. EVEN IF IT
