5 S Method

The 5Ss is a method linked to the total quality that is originated in Japan, under the orientation of W. E.
Deming for over 40 years and is included in what is known as continuous improvement or Gemba
Kaizen.

This method is referred to the creation and maintaining cleaner work area, more organized and safer.

SEIRI (SELECTION)

Its on classified and separates the necessary materials from the unnecessary and eliminated the last
ones.

The implementation method is as it follows:

a) Identify the unnecessary elements.


b) Debug useless things.
c) Identify with color cards.
d) Action plan.
e) Monitoring and reporting.

The obtained results are:

a) More space.
b) Better control and inventory.
c) Avoid articles waste.
d) Fewer accidents.

SEITON (ORDER)

Consists in stablishing the way things should locate and identify the necessary materials, on an easy way
and faster finding, using and replacing.

The implementation method is as it follows:

a) Visual controlling.
b) Locating marcs.
c) Marking with colors.
d) Identify contours.

The obtained results are:

a) Faster and easy finding of documentation, work objects, economizing movements and time.
b) Easier to put back objects or documents which have been used.
c) Helps to identify what is missing.
d) Better appearance in the working area.
SEISO (CLEANING)

Consists in identifying and eliminate the strongest source of dirt, and making sure every source is always
in a clean and perfect condition.

The implementation method is as it follows:

a) General cleaning.
b) Signings.
c) Control.
d) Tracing.

The obtained results are:

a) Increasing the equipment and installation lifetime.


b) Fewer probabilities of contracting diseases.
c) Fewer accidents.
d) Better aspect.
e) Helps to avoid bigger damage to the environment.

SEIKETSU (STANDARIZE)

Consists in distinguish the normal from an abnormal situation easier, through simple and visible rules for
everyone, maintaining the cleaning.

The implementation method is as it follows:

b) Evaluation criteria.
c) Evaluation check list.
d) Formats

The obtained results are:

a) Saving knowledge produced during years of work.


b) Improving welfare of the staff by creating a conserving impeccable site of work habit in a
permanent way.

SHITSUKE (DISCIPLINE)

It consists of working permanently to maintain efficient discipline developing training.

The implementation method is as it follows:

b) Respect and enforce the rules of work station.
c) Wear protection equipment.
d) Cleaning habit.
