Established in 1931, Pergola stands out for its

technological know-how in the field of industrial and
medical gas regulation, in addition to its ongoing
commitment to innovation. Its growth has recently
undergone further significant development with the
launch of new production units, thanks to the Cavagna
Groups purchase of the Gas Equipment Factorys assets
from Afrox in South Africa.
Pergola boasts a proud company history of over 85
years. Over that span, it has been able to reach the
highest international standards in the manufacturing of
technologies for the control and regulation of industrial
gases. For many years, in fact, it has been a benchmark
for high pressure valves. In 1992 it became part of the
Cavagna Group, where it found new opportunities
for growth and success on the market. In 1997 all of
its production departments were brought under one
roof - at the vast and well-equipped facilities in Ponte
San Marco - in order to assist with its development and
evolution in new sectors, focusing on medical gases

Nel corso del 2016 lazienda Pergola stata protagonista in unimportante operazione
di acquisizione da parte di Cavagna Group, per dotare il Gruppo di una nuova linea
di business riguardante valvole integrate e regolatori per il controllo dei gas medicali.
Altrettanto strategica la decisione di sviluppare anche le linee produttive destinate ai
regolatori per gas tecnici, implementando le potenzialit della societ RECA, realt
del Gruppo con sede a Calvisano (Brescia). Questi obiettivi sono stati raggiunti
grazie alla acquisizione degli asset della Gas Equipment Factory di Afrox (societ
con sede a Johannesburg, Sud Africa, che fa capo al Gruppo Linde). Con questa
operazione Cavagna Group ha completato il portfolio della propria
linea di regolatori alta pressione ed ha potuto inserire in catalogo
valvole riduttrici con elevati contenuti tecnologici. A livello strutturale,
per Pergola loperazione ha determinato nuove, significative evoluzioni: stato,
infatti, ampliato il capannone principale, dove trovano posto anche i nuovi uffici e
dove alla gi presente camera bianca, se ne aggiunta una seconda. Nelle camere
bianche le valvole vengono accuratamente montate, testate ed imballate per evitare
contaminazioni. Cavagna Group, in questo modo, si conferma nel ruolo di partner
dei maggiori gruppi globali nel campo della fornitura di apparecchiature medicali.
Come ricordavamo gi nello scorso numero di BLUE dedicato alle nuove camere
bianche, nellampliamento stata posta grande attenzione anche al risparmio
energetico, tramite lutilizzo di unit di trattamento daria di recente tecnologia,
di pareti e di materiali a basso rilascio particellare, di tecniche di sigillatura pi
avanzate e lutilizzo dellacqua di un pozzo scavato ad hoc per il raffrescamento,
che permetter di contenere il consumo di energia necessario per la climatizzazione
degli ambienti. Inoltre, la nuova struttura stata progettata e realizzata in modo
da garantirne la continuit di funzionamento nel caso si verifichino interruzioni
temporanee su una linea.

specific regulations; they also undergo rigorous testing (tests are performed on

During 2016 Pergola played a key role in the Cavagna Groups important purchase
of the Gas Equipment Factorys assets from Afrox (a subsidiary of The Linde Group
headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa). This acquisition has allowed the
Group to expand its portfolio with the addition of a new business line of integrated
valves and regulators for the control of medical gases. It has also tapped into the
potential of RECA, the Groups subsidiary based in Calvisano (Brescia), in order
to develop production lines dedicated to technical gas regulators. With this
purchase, the Cavagna Group has acquired a range of products to
complete its own line of high pressure regulators; at the same time, it
can now also include high-tech pressure reducing valves in its catalog.
Furthermore, this acquisition has led to significant structural changes for Pergola:
its main factory building was enlarged, including the addition of new offices and
a new cleanroom to the existing one. Gas valves are carefully assembled, tested
and packaged in the cleanrooms in order to prevent contamination. Thanks to its
cleanrooms, the Cavagna Group has strengthened its role as a strategic partner
for the leading global suppliers of medical equipment. As mentioned in the last
issue of BLUE, which featured an article on the new cleanrooms, much focus was
also placed on energy efficiency during the expansion of the Pergola facility. This
was accomplished thanks to the use of the latest technology in air handling units,
as well as the use of walls and materials that offer low particle release and the
most advanced sealing techniques. For cooling we use water from a well that we
have dug specifically for the purpose in order to reduce the energy consumption
necessary for air conditioning in the environment. In addition, the new facility
has been designed and built in order to ensure continuity of operation should a
product line be temporarily interrupted.

The industrial gas industry involves most of the people
on the planet, more than you may realize. And yet this
100-year-old industry is still unknown to most. Many
people are quite familiar with oxygen, if only because
it is the most widely used gas in healthcare; and they
its characteristic fizz in many carbonated drinks. But
of the industrial gas market, a sector which traces its
roots back to Europe and has since spread worldwide.
In addition to oxygen, in fact, there are other kinds of
gases that stand out for their versatility and commercial
distribution, such as nitrogen and argon, as well as
krypton, xenon or neon. All of these gases are generally
produced at high purity levels, using special cryogenic
(low-temperature) facilities. These products can be
either gaseous or liquid in form and have a number
of industrial uses, especially in the metal, plastics and
food industries.
Another very important gas is carbon dioxide, which is
widely used in the food industry in processes such as
the removal of caffeine from coffee beans or cooling in
the food and manufacturing industries, in addition to
its use as an acidity regulator.
Equally versatile is helium: indeed, this gas is used in
all those cases that require its unique properties, such
as its low boiling point, low density, low solubility,
and high thermal conductivity. A significant portion
of the worlds helium production is used in cryogenic
applications, mostly for cooling superconducting
magnets.
Other important uses are related to pressurization and
the creation of controlled atmospheres.
Even ammonia is widely used in many industries and
is one of the most-produced chemicals in the world.
Thanks to its interesting thermodynamic properties, it
is used in cold storage.
Lets finish this quick overview with one of the most
widely used industrial and medical gases: nitrogen.
It is used in the electronics industry to prevent the
oxidation of conductors and printed circuit boards;
while in the food industry, it is used to extend the shelf
life of packaged foods by preventing spoilage, mold
growth and insect infestation. It also protects metals
such as steel, copper and aluminum during annealing,
carburizing and other operations in the furnace. Lastly,
it is used to cool extrusion dies and to assist in plasma
cutting.

up in the balance of power and in the dynamics of the
global economy. As presidents and governments change,
great Russia nonetheless remains a central player that
everyone must deal with. The extent and power of the
Russian state make this nation a key partner as well as a
tremendous opportunity to develop interesting business
relations for those who know how to seize it. Russias
socioeconomic scenario is famously unique, but it is also
fragmented, and these same two characteristics apply to
both its gas market and the operations of the local and
international gas players who work there. Successfully
dealing with and managing the Russian gas market
requires significant investments and a direct, ongoing
knowledge of the major industry players in both the
public and private sector. For this reason the Cavagna
Group has further strengthened its partnership with
its official distributor in Russia, with the specific aim of

Returning to the overall scenario, it is useful to point out
that on an institutional and government level, Russia is
giving greater market space to the major gas companies;
it is doing so, however, without hindering a historic and
long-standing internal market made up of many small
and medium-sized companies. This perspective becomes
even clearer by analyzing each sector individually.
During 2016 the CNG and LPG vehicle market was
characterized by the introduction of much more stringent
aftermarket regulations, which effectively brought one of
the most widespread sectors throughout all of Russia to
its knees. Indeed, it has become almost impossible for
individuals to convert their gasoline-powered vehicle into
one that runs on LPG or CNG. On the other hand, the
OEM market has actually benefited from this situation,
with significant growth in supply and a reduction in
the price of new vehicles. Unfortunately, however,
the international sanctions imposed on Russia due to
the Ukrainian crisis have

that industrial and medical gas cylinders do not belong to the gas companies,
but rather are collectively owned. This means that an empty cylinder must be
exchanged for a full one: in practice, a cylinder dealer cannot refuse to accept and
exchange a gas cylinder, no matter how old or damaged it may be. Nonetheless,
an important new option has emerged that is generating more and
more interest: the worlds leading gas companies are now renting
cylinders to consumers. In this way, the market is gradually getting
used to a solution that helps modernize the countrys cylinder stock,
with benefits for users in terms of both costs and safety. In any case, a
real breakthrough in the Russian market will only be possible if a law is brought
into force that changes these old, collectivist policies. The Cavagna Group works

even in the field of gas regulation and control.

One of the most popular acronyms of the last few

years has been IoT, or Internet of Things. It actually
stands for many things at the same time: a will to
innovate on a global scale, a high-tech challenge,
and no less important, a sizable market. It does
not matter what kind of technology is used by the
products to connect to the Internet; what matters
is that they are interconnected, accessible and
searchable from around the world or on virtual
private networks.
The concepts of cloud computing, Internet
services and big data are closely tied to the
IoT acronym. Much of the IoTs success will
also be staked on how securely the data can
spread throughout the network.
With this as a backdrop, each manufacturer
must evaluate the advisability and opportunity
of equipping their products with IoT interfaces in
order to connect to the network and still do their
job, perhaps while even providing some new kinds
of services to the consumer.
Moreover, the economic aspect of the IoT is not
to be underestimated. In fact, according to the
forecasts of major market research institutes, it is
considered the next industrial revolution: current
estimates indicate that by 2020 there will be over
20 billion devices connected to each other. It seems
clear, then, that a correct estimate of the IoTs
financial impact remains elusive.

which will have a significant impact on our daily lives.
There are a myriad of opportunities in this scenario, and as a result the
Cavagna Group has decided to take a realistic look at the IoT. Starting
from logical, feasible and practicable grounds, the Group has run some
increasingly intense research projects and experiments regarding the
digitization of gas regulation and control systems. Indeed, a company cannot
even consider approaching the IoT without having proper and digitally
tested technologies in place. To that end, the Cavagna Group is investing
significant resources in the development of digital technologies for some
specific products, starting with regulators and valves for high pressure
gases, but with an eye on natural gas regulation and more domestic

mente resi dalle altre unit organizzative presenti
in azienda, a partire dai servizi ICT fino a quelli Am-
ministrativi e di Procurement.

sono parte del patrimonio del Gruppo nella sua

experience of the Brescia Smart Living project is
proof of this future potential. The Cavagna Group
joined this project in the spirit of pragmatism and
innovation, partnering with other companies, the
University of Brescia and representatives from the
City of Brescias public institutions in order to build
an Italian demonstrator of the above-mentioned
concepts - in short, a smart city platform. The project
was deemed so interesting that it was awarded as
an exemplary pilot run for future developments in
the IoT.

Municipalities held in Bari last October, Brescia
was awarded the Cresco Award 2016 as the
smartest city, thanks to its Brescia Smart
Living project. The Cavagna Group is proud to

more than 120 other competing projects.

The Cavagna Group and its product lines
were present at the following number
of events and exhibitions: 4 in South
America, 8 in Asia and Central Asia, 7 in
Europe, 1 in Africa and 5 in the USA. It
should also be pointed out that we organized a
road show in the United States to promote our
Greengear products. The main event was held
on July 9 in Newport, Rhode Island, during an
exciting match between the US and Italian polo
teams. The goal was to raise awareness about
the Greengear product line and to allow potential
customers to experience the benefits of our
LPG-powered equipment. The Cavagna Group
also participated in another event in the US
market, which turned out to be very interesting
indeed: the NPGA Southeastern Convention &
International Propane Expo (April 8-10), held at
the Music City Center in Nashville, Tennessee.
After 20 years of being held in Atlanta, the
NPGA show moved to Nashville, and this
change in location led to a boost in attendance
compared to previous editions. This was the
perfect occasion for Cavagna North America to
present its new LPG catalog for the US market.

Our colleague Matteo Compagnoni is taking over the role of Coordinator of the Cavagna
Groups R&D Smart Metering & IoT Devices team. Matteo will be in charge of the Brescia
Smart Living project and will be coordinating the development of new Internet of Things
solutions for some Cavagna Group devices. Born in Brescia but a citizen of the world, Matteo
holds a degree in Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering. As for his personal life, he is
married and he has a 10-year-old daughter; in addition, he has always been a tech enthusiast
and a passionate traveler. For over 20 years now, he has dedicated his professional career to
information technology and Automatic Meter Reading devices. He has also held senior positions
as a team builder, as well as providing his expertise as a software architect to R&D departments
in order to develop solutions in the fields of telemetry and remote control. Furthermore, he
collaborates with industrial associations in their training centers and educational initiatives.
In recent years he has been focusing on software development techniques for use in artificial
intelligence models.

Anche questa nomina si inserisce nellimportante evoluzione dellorganizzazione commerciale del
Gruppo Cavagna. Nel suo nuovo ruolo Carlo si concentrer prima di tutto nel ripianificare lofferta dei
regolatori GPL di Cavagna Group a livello mondiale. Arriva a questa nuova posizione di responsabilit
con tanta esperienza nel ramo delle vendite, nel settore regolatori GPL, maturata con oltre 15 anni di
lavoro alla societ Reca. Prima di raggiungere lattuale incarico, Carlo ha ricoperto la carica di Sales
Area Manager per lAmerica Latina, Medio Oriente, Nord Europa e Africa. Sposato, nel tempo libero
gioca spesso con suo figlio Mattia, di 8 anni. Ha una originale passione: lapicoltura.

will focus primarily on redeveloping the product offering of the Cavagna Groups LPG regulators
worldwide. He comes to this new position of responsibility with a great deal of experience in
LPG regulator sales, which he has gained in over 15 years spent at Reca. Before reaching his
current position, Carlo held the position of Area Sales Manager for Latin America, the Middle
East, Northern Europe and Africa. He is married, and he often spends his free time playing with
his 8-year-old son Mattia. Carlo also has a unique passion: he is a beekeeper.

Cavagna Group da pi di 12 anni. Attualmente responsabile vendite per tutte le Linee di business
del gruppo negli Stati Uniti e in Canada. Prima di questo incarico ha ricoperto la carica di Regional
Sales Manager per il Sud America e prima ancora, Direttore vendite di GPL per il Medio Oriente.
Lesperienza e professionalit di Federico Bruschi assicurano una transizione efficace nel non facile
compito di sostituire Loredana. Sposato, con un figlio di 10 mesi di nome Leonardo, ha molte
passioni. Lui stesso simpaticamente ne ricorda alcuni: atterrare al JFK di New York, la Bossa Nova, il
buon vino, Frank Sinatra, il football, il film Il padrino parte 2, lo spiedo bresciano, il sashimi, Parigi,

LPG industry and compressed gases to this important position. Federico comes to this position with
a lot of industry knowledge and sales experience in LPG and compressed gases, having spent more
than 12 years at Cavagna Group, among which, over four working at Cavagna North America in the
US. He is currently in charge of the whole Cavagna Groups product range in the United States and
Canada. Previously, he held the position of Regional Sales Manager for South America, and before
that he was LPG Sales Director for the Middle East. Federicos background and expertise ensure an
effective transition in the difficult task of replacing Loredana. On the personal side, he is married and
has a 10-month-old son named Leonardo. He is a man of many interests, and he himself playfully

come Area Manager di Cavagna Group per lAmerica Latina, sempre nel settore gas compressi; ha
ricoperto, inoltre, la carica di Sales Area Manager per il Regno Unito e la Scandinavia. Apprezzato
per la sua competenza e senso di responsabilit, un riconosciuto leader non solo allinterno del
Gruppo Cavagna, ma dagli interlocutori di mercato a livello internazionale. Convolato a nozze
recentemente, un appassionato di immersioni subacquee.
