Ecological Succession: School Farm Observations

Figure 1.
Bare Rock

The picture represents the first two stages of ecological succession ,this sidewalk is considered a bare
rock, its given life to lichen(which is what lichen grows on) and helped it grow in an ecosystem. The
little gold circles with the arrows pointing to them are the lichen (pioneer species).
Figure 2. Grasses

This is the next stage of ecological succession, the picture above shows the growth of shrubs and
grasses as the populate the area. Grasses usually come into play whenever the soil that is created by
the lichens is deep enough to support life after many years.

Figure 3:

This third stage of ecological succession is where the shrubs start growing. Shrubs start growing
because pioneer species starts to grow. As more shrubs began to grow more and spread throughout
the area, small trees start to grow in the next stage.

Figure 4:

This stage is the last stage in ecological succession. There is a fully grown mature forest, complete with
shrubs, trees, and grasses.Small, fast growing trees can be seen in this patch of land. These trees will
make way for larger, more complex trees, which can be seen towards the background.
