Part Three
Read the following text and write a summary of it in the space provided on the next
page. Try to write about 100 words.
For generations, we have been putting our rubbish out for the council to take away
and bury in the ground in huge holes called landfill sites. The problem is that these
huge holes are filling up faster and faster with increasing amounts of rubbish. Landfill
sites are being closed down, and getting planning permission to build new ones is
very difficult nobody wants to live next to a landfill site. They create toxic liquid and
gases, which should be contained and dealt with, but inevitably accidents happen.
Nobody wants to live near an incinerator either, and besides, they create toxic gases
and ash. The ash needs to be safely disposed of usually in landfill.
As a society we are consuming more and more of the worlds resources and
generating more and more waste materials. In the UK around a third of the contents
of the average dustbin could be composted. At least another third is paper and
cardboard which could be recycled. Local authorities are under increasing pressure
to cut down on the amounts being disposed of in landfill sites and incinerators. Not
only do we now have a landfill tax, but a European directive has decreed that all
member states must successfully reduce the amounts being finally disposed of in
landfill. This means achieving much higher recycling and composting rates. It also
means changing our perceptions of what waste is. Most of what we throw away
could be repaired, recycled or composted. Future generations will no doubt be
mining landfill sites for valuable resources.
As well as trying to think about what to do with our rubbish, we need to think about
where all this rubbish comes from in the first place. We can make a huge difference
by refusing to buy things that will become a problem when they need to be disposed
of. More consumer items are being made now than ever before in the history of the
planet. Many of them have an incredibly short life, and are quickly discarded into the
global dustbin, so try to buy items that are repairable. Shopping is now a major
leisure activity and the attraction of a particular product depends to a large extent on
how it is packaged. Reliance on processed food has grown which has meant even
more packaging to throw away. Bottles are no longer returnable, and plastic is used
for more and more items. Recycling saves energy, saves natural resources and
reduces waste disposal.
