LIM GUAN ENG CHIEF MINISTER OF PENANG AND CHAIRMAN OF PBAPP SAVE WATER NOW TO AVOID WATER SHORTAGE IN PENANG PENANG, 12/3/2014: Although Penang's overall water supply status is not critical, the people should save water now to avoid a water crisis during this prolonged dry season. There has been no significant rainfall for 8 weeks. While PBAPP is sustaining continuous good water supply in Penang, we need the cooperation of the people to save water now. The people's cooperation is crucial because we do not know how long this dry season will last. Although forecasts indicate that the rains are coming soon, Penang has to be certain that it has enough water until there is actual rainfall. It pays to be prudent. As such, | would like to request that all Penangites to practise the following water saving tips from today: 1) Avoid using a hose as far as possible. The Penang State Government has obtained a guarantee from KeTTHA that water will be released from Kedah into the Muda River during dry seasons, should there be a shortfall of water for Penang, during the construction and defects liability period of the dam project. The Mengkuang Dam expansion project is scheduled for completion in July 2016. In the meantime, the costs of Kedah releasing water into the Muda River, if any, would be borne by the ministry. Penang’s water infrastructure is being managed effectively to ensure that the state will not face a water shortage as long as PBAPP can draw sufficient water from the Muda River daily and there is sufficient storage in the Air tam Dam and Teluk Bahang Dam. Today, the Muda River water level is at 2.38 meters. The level is good enough for PBAPP to draw water from the river to meet about 80% of Penang's daily water needs. Meanwhile, the level of effective capacity of the Teluk Bahang Dam is still relatively high at 83.6%. AIR ITAM DAM The main concem at the moment is the effective capacity of the Air tam Dam. Water from this dam is drawn to supply the Air Itam area and its immediate surroundings, including several areas located on high ground ‘As such, PBAPP has started diverting water from the Teluk Bahang Dam and Seberang Prai to Air Itam, in order to reduce the outflow from the Air tam Dam. As a result, the present effective capacity of the Air Itam Dam is being sustained at 67.3%, since 27" February 2014, over the last 14 days. Based on present projections, it is estimated that the Air Itam Dam reserves should last for about 66 days, without rain. Weather forecasts indicate that Malaysia can expect rain by April 2014, However, let us save water now to ensure that there is no crisis. Please save water now.
