FreeBSD berasal dari BSD, versi UNIX yang dikembangkan oleh Universitas California di Berkeley. Apa saja kelebihannya ? FreeBSD menawarkan fitur-fitur canggih pada jaringan, stat belum ada pada sistem operasi komersil terbaik saat ini tas, keamanan dan kecocokan yang masih SolusiIntomet yang handal FreeBSD termasuk apa yang dipertimbangkan sebagai implementasi referensi untukaplikasi TCP / IP, Protocol Stack 4.4BSD sangat ideal untuk aplikasi jaringan dan internet. FreeBSD menyediakan layanan jaringan yang kuat dibawah beban yang sangat berat dan menggunakan_ memori yang sangat efisien untuk mempertahankan respon yang baik dari beberapa ribu proses pemakai secara simultan, ‘Memiliki apikasi yang berjumlah besar FreeBSD didalamnya terdapat lebih dari 14000 paket-paket aplikasi yang siap di install seperti : Apache, ‘Samba, MySQL, OpenOffice.org, KDE, GNOME, Mplayer, dan lain-lain. FreeBSD menyediakan sistem ports yang mengunduh sumbernya dari internet atau dari CD-ROM dan binari-binari yang sudah ter-compile, termasuk build dan install sistem pendukung-pendukungnya ‘Semua operasi ini diselesaikan secara transparan untuk si pemakai Rata-rata binari GNU/Linux dapat dijalankan pada sistem FreeBSD, sebagai contoh : Acrobat Reader, Oracle, SAP/R3, Mathematica, Quake3 dan lain-lain tanpa adanya degradasi kecepatan pada sistem. Instalasi FreeBSD sangatiah mudah FreeBSD dapat di install dari berbagai media penyimpanan yang ada seperti CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, floppy disk, Pita Magnetik, Partisi MS-DOS atau jika kita mempunyai koneksi jaringan, kita dapat menginstalinya melalui anonymous FTP atau NFS, FreeBSD itu gratis alias tidak borbayar FreeBSD didapatkan secara gratis tanpa biaya dan termasuk sumber kode lengkap didalamnya. Fokus utama sumber kode pada sistem FreeBSD adalah dibawah lisensi standard BSD. Dimana berlawanan dengan Lisensi GPL yang digunakan kernel inux, lisensi BSD mengijinkan distribusi hasil kerja tanpa harus menyertakan sumber kodenya. Hal ini yang memberikan kebebasan perusahaan-perusahaan untuk menggunakan kode FreeBSD sebagai dasar produk berbayar mereka, yang terkadang apa yang sudah mereka buat dilepaskan kembali ke komunitas. Dapat menangani beberapa tugas sekaligus FreeBSD dapat digunakan untuk desktop, server, aplikasi tertanam.
